I bit my tongue and bought a new turbo!

What manifold and o2 housing were you planning on using?
How much boost were you aiming for?
What are you doing with your old s16g?

Stilling looking for a manifold and for a o2 housing a friend has one laying around that will bolt up.

I'm going to start at 10psi and work my way up, dont want to go to high because i am still running stock bottom end.

I'm going to be selling my small 16g

Good price for sure- but did you research the 57-trim before you bought? It seems the 57-trim doesn't flow push much more air than a 50-trim, but spools much slower:

Could of gotten a bolt on 50trim from SBR for around the same price.

It wouldn't be a real Garrett turbo like the OP bought- it would be made by Kinetic with a horrible reliability reputation.

I'd choose Garrett reliability for that price. I might've went with a different compressor wheel, but I'd go for Garrett over Kinetic any day of the week.

Shoulda went Holset, with that much money you could of had a beast of an HX40 easily. Nice turbo though.

I did buy a Holset first, but when I finally got it, it was crap. The guy told me it was a great turbo no shaft play, but when I took the compressor housing off the fins were rubbing on the housing. So after that I told myself i'm not going to buy a use turbo.

I've bought a pile of used turbos in my day- occasionally I'll come across an idiot that plays dumb and insists their garbage turbo is in fine rebuildable shape.

I bought a Small 16G as a rebuildable core a while back- the ad clearly stated that the turbo had *some* shaft play, but none of the photos displayed the compressor or turbine wheels. The seller claimed it was in fine shape- didn't smoke, just needed a rebuild. I bit the bullet and went for it as the price was reasonable and the sale included lots of oil lines and other accessories of value.

When I got the turbo, the first thing I noticed was about 1/2" of up/down shaft play. The compressor wheel was mangled- the fins were hooked from hitting the housings, and the turbine wheel had broken fins and was saturated with oil. This turbo HAD to burn about a quart of oil every 3 miles when it was on his car.

I contacted the seller, and he continued to play dumb saying "he's no turbo expert" and "I still got a hell of a deal". I cannot tolerate when people who are selling their garbage try telling ME that I got a hell of a deal.

Applying this to Holsets, I've yet to buy a Holset that wasn't in good rebuildable condition. The first HX40 I bought for parts over two years ago had a broken compressor wheel, but that was displayed in the listing.....and I ended up selling the 16cm2 turbine housing for more than I paid for the turbo so it's all good.

That was i was going to do first but after adding all of the stuff i need to make it work I know I would be better off buying a new turbo...The holset was an WH1C

ouch, there is a lot of info out there showing 57 trims arent that great on a dsm.
Should have got a 50 trim or a borg warner s256 or something and you would get faster spool and more power/efficiency.

Good luck with the setup though, maybe you can prove people wrong.

Definitely not the turbo of choice in the dsm community, but it is capable of power nonetheless. It made pretty good power back when SBR did the internally gated turbo test. Curious what the A/R on the exhaust side is? I would say use it since you have it and when you want to upgrade, have it machined for a bigger compressor wheel.

One of the many reasons why I went with this turbo is because my best friend had the same turbo on his rabbit and loved it. Also 50trim just was alttle small and a 60trim is way to big so the 57trim look just right

It's a low pressure ratio turbo, a 50 trim would be a far better choice within the T04E family. Where are you getting that a 50 trim is smaller? It's rated at more flow and higher pressure ratios. Either way, you're talking about really obsolete wheel aero. The Garrett GT stuff is far more efficient, and other options exist like the Borg Warner and Holsets now. You can pick up a BW S256 non-extended tip for about the same price you paid, with way more efficiency/potential.
