How would I know if my engine is pinging?

cambridge,
Hey guys,

Just curious, but on my 91 Talon Turbo (stock)I have tried High, Mid and Low octane fuels and I did not detect any pinging at all even with the low octane fuel. The car did seem to run a bit better with the high octane but at the same time if i can run the low stuff and there is no detectable pinging in the engine then why bother??

I put on about 45000km's a year, if i fill up with regular at 95 cents a litre then i figure i will spend $3895.00 a year in fuel
At $1.05 i will spend $4305.00 a year. that's $410.00 a year that i could save.

If indeed i can safely run the regular fuel with out pinging then it would make sense to run it....

I just want to make sure i know what to listen for. So i don't damage anything.

What octane does the users manual say to use? because both my dash and fuel filler door simply say "unleaded fuel only" - nothing about premium fuel.

Thanks

Thanks,

Is pinging something that you can typically hear or can the engine ping and be undetectible to the ear?

you may hear you may not. Usually you won't hear it, alot depends on your exhaust. Another thing never run less than the manufacturer recommends on octane rating your just looking for trouble. keep it at the high octane for sure. o ya and the safc cannot read knock, if i were you i would invest in a datalogger for under a 100 bux can't go wrong there and the software is free.

Ive heard it before. It one of those things where you are like "oh thats what it sounds like...".
