Is there any way to tell if the TOB on a 2G transmission is installed, or installed correctly? I didn't put this rebuilt transmission onto this engine, something I was wondering about..

let's say the TOB was not there, inside the bellhousing. What would happen if you attempted to drive the car? Would something get damaged?

if the "throw out bearing was not in the transmission"..? is what i am assuming your saying,...?

hahahaha... You wouldn't be able to get into, or out of gear..

The throwout bearing is what pushes in the pressure plate fingers to engage the clutch or disengage the clutch..

When you push the clutch pedal in, fluid pushes from the master cylinder to the slave cylinder, When the slave cylinder gets fluid pressure, it pushes a nipple into the clutch fork.. In turn the clutch fork pushes the TOB into the pressure plate, and then into the clutch..

Without one of these parts above. your clutch system would not work..

YOU NEED A TOB to even move..

P.S... if your car moves, its there. if it aint it won't move.
You can look up into the transmission from the clutch fork hole, and look up.. it looks like this..

I really appreciate the fast reply. I can't thank you enough, for this detailed write up. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

I've just been wondering how 'good' the transmission in this car really is, I got paperwork from the rebuild but the company dogbox is no longer rebuilding transmissions...

Anyways - I've only moved the car around the driveway so far, in neutral. I know for a fact I've successfully engaged into neutral, and in first & second gear with the engine on.

while on the subject of the transmission engaging,

I'm only having trouble with getting into 5th gear and reverse half the time, but I can't tell if I'm actually in 5th gear. This is with shifting the gears with the car off and ignition on. Shouldn't I be able to shift into 5th gear, just to see if it engages corectly?

I already asked if it was possible to just see if the gears would engage, with it off, and everyone said it was cool. I'll pull up the thread:

What problem are you having exactly? If the transmission is freshly rebuilt you need you drive it for a while to let the gears break in.

No problem yet, just trying to clarify some small things after going through and checking things out, before start ups & especially its first drive, which has yet to happen, but soon.

if your on a slope.. or somewhere where if you let the car in neutral and it could rule back, will it roll back??

Now if you push the clutch down and put in first gear, and try to push the car, or let the car move on a slope, does it stay put like something is not letting the car move? or does it move still??

If the car is in 1st gear and the car doesn't move when pushed, that means you can engage the clutch, which means you have a TOB.

If the car is in 1st gear and the car does move freely and easily, that means your in "1st gear" but it isn't engaging the clutch which means your TOB is not working.

Judging from the pics, the TOB looks like it has good leverage and you shouldn't have problem shifting. So not sure the problem your having.

Often it's not easy to get a transmission into any random gear when the engine is off and the car is not moving. It's mainly because of how everything is lined up inside. Usually, it's almost as if you have to row through the gears to get it to slot in right.

For instance, sometimes I will be unable to get a (any) car into reverse from neutral. I'll just keep bumping into it halfway.. So, I throw it in first, and then it slides into reverse easily, and that's with the engine both running -- not like that makes a difference here since the transmission shafts are not spinning with the clutch engaged -- and not running.

I know for a fact that my Talon's transmission is picky about what gears you try to put it in at idle with the engine off. I usually have to put it in one before the other just so that things are lined up nicely for it to gear in.

Long story short, if I can't put it into 3rd directly, I do 2nd (or 4th) first.. same with any other gear.

Got that backwards. If the TOB isnt present, theres nothing there to engage the clutch fingers, meaning it wont "let go" and allow the car to roll freely in gear, regardless of hitting the clutch pedal ;)

Actually read entire thread... This guy is hilarious... I know i'll get chewed out for posting on the ops thread, but this is pretty damn funny

+1 to all the people that answered a serious reply.

Give the guy props. Hes been working on the car two years and still hasnt drove it. Hes definitely dedicated. I wouldve given up after 6 months LOL

I appreciate that. I didn't realize my cluelessness was so hilarious haha, as %95 of my posts are questions. but it's been a long two years, basically this rebuild started last year, after I decided to quit on the first rebuild, which also took a year roughly....it was started by my friend and we went in on it together, I trusted his word strongly as he's has 6 of these cars before I had any...sure enough it's just like everyone says on here, don't trust other's with your engine :nono:

He didn't tell me about the interference engine deal, and I pulled the head after finding out, knowing he claimed "it jumped time, but just for a second" sure enough a single slighly bent valve, but a destroyed cam cap bearing as a result of assembling the cams with dirty hands....

not even talking about how dsmgraveyard originally built this block, and forgot to install the oil squirters, after tapping the threads :ohdamn: :ohdamn: :ohdamn:

I deffinatley wanted to be sure of alot of things. thank god for these forums, and all the great people on here. thanks everyone.. :thumb:

I know bud, ive been kinda following your build. And if you dont know something, its better to ask then guess and find out the hard way later. And hopefully when you get through you'll be a guru LOL ;)

Sorry to hear about you dealings with dsmgraveyard. I had a horrible time with them as well... I ordered some parts, canvled order, and ended up getting parts 3 months after ordering and my rebuild was complete... Worst vendor ever. Good luck with the rest of the build...

As far a .your friend.goes, Thats.all a part.of learning process man. Hang in there a keep the questions coming.

I had the same problem with my Trany..going into 5th and reverse.turns out I had the wrong Trany cable mounts on and it wouldn't let the shifter go over far enough.my is 90 1g don't know to much on 2g.to check it put the car in neutral and look at the cable boots at the Trany to see if they are bunch up or don't look like they are in the middle of there movement...Z
