I'm looking at buying a 1g DSM later today. He says it might have a 16g but isn't sure. How can i tell the difference between a 16g and the stock 14b without taking it outta the car?

Short answer, you cant. They are both inside of a td05h housing. Both run external wastegates, both run water and oil cooling.

Long answer:
Measure the Inlet on the cold side, compare to a 14b turbo. Look at the compressor wheel. Compare to a 14b. Crane your neck inside there and hope the serial number is clean enough to read, you will probably have to pull the intake snorkel, upper coolant hose etc out of the way.

I can get a few pics and measurements from a 14b if you need it.

Yeah i was thinking that's what i'd have to do. I know they both have the same housing which is why i was wondering if there was an easier way :/ I'd love a pic of the 16g wheel if possible. I have a blown 14b at my place so i know what those look like.

What are the two serial numbers for each?

Pull the intake tube off the turbo inlet. Look at the blades.

14b will have all of them the same height.
16g will have them staggered.

Just take off the intake tube and then look inside at the fins. On a 14b there will just be a single fin setup. The 16g has the twin fin design...its kinda like instead of one large fin it has 2 smaller ones angles a little more. You will know what I am talking about if it is a 16g. Otherwise like they said you can run the serial number on it to see.

That is what the twin fin I am talking about looks like
