This is how to remove the ignition on a 1G(possibly a 2g will be the same):
First remove the 2 screws on the bottom of the steering column cover by the tilt lever:
Then remove the 2 screws that hold the lower dash panel in place:
Once you have it lowered out of the way remove the back 2 screws and remove the steering column cover and set it aside:
Now remove the screw that holds the lighted ring around the ignition:
Pull it twords you and out of the way. Now insert the key into the ingition and turn it to the accessory position(ill show you why later), with a small drill bit or small tipped phillips push in the pin on the bottom and pull the cylendar housing straight out:
Now i'll show you why you turn the key to accessory: see that gold rod in the above picture? It goes in the groove you see below. if it is not in the accessory position the clyendar housing will be locked in place:
Now that you have the assembly out take a flat screwdriver and insert it into the ignition assembly right below where I circled on the column and turn it to the left(off position).
Now that you have it out with the key still in the ignition, remove the snap ring on the back and pull the cylendar out of the housing:
Now you can clean the cylendar really well with WD40 or similar. See those little black squares to the right of where i circled below, dont lose them, they will fall out..
Now see the pins on the cylendar that are circled? make sure they are completly flush in the cylendar, if they are not flush it will cause the key to catch when you go to start the car. (you have a metal key that rubs against metal every time you insert it into the ignition,Eventually you will get wear). You can take a small flat file and file them down flush if needed. once everything looks flush reclean the cylendar. Now put a light coating of grease on the cylendar and reinstall it. you might have to compress the gold lever and the pin on the other side to get the cylendar back in the housing. Now comes the reinstallation... make sure the key is in the accessory position for reassembly. It took me about 30 minutes total to disassemble, clean, file, grease and reassemble everything.
