The Story of how the Car Gods gave me TWINS. 6/6/16
So back in August of 2013 my son found a 1G Talon AWD about 6 hours from our house and talked me into taking a trailer to see it and if he bought it then we would be able to trailer it home. So I took the ole truck and car trailer and off we went on a journey. When we arrived we were on the Army base at Fort Riley KS. The owner of the 1G was a “mechanic” for the Army and bragged about the little red car. I told my son to drive it and if he thought it was a good deal then we would buy it but if not then it was just a 6 hr drive home and no money out of pocket. Well he drove it around the block on the base and said he thought it would be a good buy at 1500.00 so we made the deal. It was a Red 1990 Eagle Talon TSI AWD and I really didn’t know much about these little machines as I was and still am a Chevy fanatic. We got it home and drove it for about 2-3 weeks and had to tighten every last nut, bolt and screw on the car, everything was loose including the head that was maybe at 50 ft lbs. The “mechanic” had POUNDED 6 bolt head studs through a 2g head and some how got them in. For the life of me, I don’t know why this guy bragged about being a “mechanic” for the Army, the poor troops that used his equipment sure didn’t have the best guy on their side that’s for sure. So after about 3 weeks, the son was driving it and the inducer nut came off of the 14b turbo and it smoked like a mosquito fogger until we limped it back to the house. This is where I all of a sudden became it’s new owner. My son knew of a turbo guy named Justin Whitesell and we got together and bought a bastard 20g from him to replace the old 14b. It worked very well but before too long the engine just gave up the ghost and was just wore out. I started reading on the DSMTuners and DSMTalk pages to brush up on how these little cars were built so I could try to save it’s life since it was a cute little car. The son, in the mean time, purchased a 1997 Talon TSI AWD auto car and started his build and was soon running 12’s so I figured that the little red car could maybe do the same and would be a fun little project for a fast street car. Since I had limited experience with Mitsubishi motors, I bought a built short block and then had the 2g head completely gone through with new guides, valves, retainers, seals and of course had it machined for a true flat surface so my build started. I was amazed that the car came with a 1g intake bolted to a 2g head which sure didn’t look like it mated up very well so I did some research and settled on a EVO3 intake which I really liked and it matched up with the ports on the 2g head so I felt better about it to start with. While I was putting the engine together, I caught wind thru the local gossip of a car that had been sitting since 1999 under a tree behind a hill where it could never be seen from the road and I inquired about looking at it for parts. It turned out to be a 1990 GSX that had been hit hard in the rear and the insurance company had totaled it out but just a couple thousand miles before it was wrecked, it received a factory recall transfer case, factory Mitsu rebuild of the transmission, since the old transfer case had locked up and the dealer knew they needed to at least open up the transmission and double check everything. It even received a new 14b at the time, then 2000 miles later the car got rearended and was sit under the tree to just sit until 2014 when I found it. It really was a “barn” find even though it wasn’t in a barn. I gave $800 for it and it came as described and come to find out the recalled transfer case was an iron headed 22 spline 1990 unit. The car had 110,000 miles on the odometer and the kid said that it had run as recently as 5 or so years ago which was the last time he started it. No 4 bolt rearend but had working A/C and cruise still, just as it came from the factory. So I continue on the build of the Talon to get it in good shape and hopefully make some horses and have some fun. Fast forward another year and the Talon has a good 10:1 motor with all the goodies inside (see my profile) and my son again has a buddy that is wanting to sell a 1990 Plymouth Laser. This young fellow lives in Topeka and could sell it to another local person but they were going to just part it out and the kid wanted to see it go to a good home that would love it and try to keep it on the road. I agreed on $500.00 and he DELIVERED it to me that weekend. Well the car had a blown head gasket, absolutely NO compression but was bone stock also down to the little black plastic BOV cover that always is missing. So that little car has sit until this spring and I finally got the motor out of the GSX and am planning on just putting new timing components on it and fresh tune up and maintenance and slap it into the Laser. Well here is where the interesting “Car Gods” have finally showed me that they are in my life for some reason. A few months ago, I had a member on DSMTuners wanting to run VIN numbers for some reason so I gave him all three of mine (plus the VIN from a 1997 TSI that I picked up in a trade, it ended up being a 1998, last year Talon, what a plus). When the VIN’s came back deciphered, it turns out that the first car, the 1990 Talon and the 1990 Laser, which both came from Fort Riley were both built on the same day at the same plant and were the same color, one just being a AWD car (the Talon) and the other being a FWD car (the Laser). Now what is the likely hood of anyone owning 2 cars built the same day, same color of ANY car line that is now 26 years later? The Car Gods were smiling on me is all I can say and they blessed me with TWINS! That’s my story, I hope it inspires others to try to save these cars when they can and just goes to show you that sometimes things have a purpose other than what you originally thought!

. Glad you have learned to love these little beasts. And even dusted a local 11 second v8 malibu with a powerglide, 4:56 gears, trans brake and 400+ cubic inch stroker motor in your little awd beast. Just goes to show these things will blow peoples minds every day of the week!!
. I seem to always get these Car God deals on the strangest things, like in the story. Been that way all my life with unique vehicles. The youngest son will get to drive the Laser RS since he is helping me get it running again so we can all have a Camaro and a Turbo DSM! Thanks for reading my story!!!
