How much power can a stock 2G 5 speed tranny withstand?

ok, i have a auto tranny now with 124K miles and it is about to go on me....i priced a fully built auto tranny for about $3000 whereas i can get a 5 speed swapped with a upgraded clutch and flywheel for about $2300 or so...but what i need to know is if i use a 5 speed tranny(all stock internals) with only a upgraded clutch and flywheel will the tranny break on me or are those two things sufficient enough for my mods (basically a big T28 with basic mods, soon to have injectors) If you dont think that the 5 speed will withstand the power then what do i need to replace for it to work?

Thanks :dsm:

many people including myself have been running stock tranny's on 16G's and even 50 trims for years.. [ I just peaked a year ] . a standard 300 whp DSM will be fine with a healtyh trans.

BUT, keep in mind, even a stock DSM with a shitty driver that redlines it everywhere WILL kill tranny. treat the tranny right and it will last a long time.

i ran a 50 trim in my GSX with a stock internal tranny (had 90k miles) for over a year with no problems. i changed the fluid in it every other month (have a friend that works at mitsu). it shouldnt give you a problem as long as you take care of it.

My recommendation is stick with your automatic. If you like it that is. They are consistent and reliable. Not sure what might be the problem with yours.

Go here and call these guys. www.importperformancetrans.com
They can help and this is the only auto dsm guys I would trust. Also check out www.atdsm.org. There is more help there.

I think gsx trannys have stronger internals. I have 432hp and have broken tranny twice. 1st time I was in 2nd gear racing a modded transam and when I hit 3rd gear it did nothing. opened the tranny and syncros and sables were broken. second time same thing but worse. lots of pinions broke, had to replace shafts, pinions, syncros. all of this with street tires.

An open differential and wheel spin/hop killed your trannies. It is all in how you take care of them. An lsd insert and things might have been better. I have a friend that broke a shift fork in my 1G built tranny and his stock 2G tranny. Needless to say he doesn't get to play with my cars anymore. GSX's aren't any stronger.

well I dont have wheel hop. I've done everything to try and eliminate that. prothane motor mounts, koni adjustable suspension. now my tranny was completly stock, diff, stock. it did spin the wheels alot. when I mounted it again I welded the diff. to have posi traccion. but its a pain in the neck on curves. and grip is only improved a little bit.

Well, I just got a deal of a lifetime. I traded my auto tranny@ $500 for a manual tranny with quaife differential, spec stage5 clutch and clutch master fly wheel, and B&M short shifter. The tranny was on a race car with 200 hard racing miles. Clutch has no burn marks or signs of any abnormal wear. This should last me forever...but if I were you consider your budget and build it to your driving needs. Mine is over kill for ocassional street driving but I'm sure I'm going to burn off lots of tires.

It's not how much HP it how much abuse you put them through. Select a very aggressive clutch.. Shifting as hard as you can every time. It's so funny to make you tire squeal in between shifts in a AWD.. That will break shit. I can't stress this enough, "You can't drive your car hard in between shifts and launching it. That's when shit breaks." You can kill a trans on a stock car with an agressive clutch. IE 2600 ACT

My advice to you is to talk to Jon @ www.Teamrip.com You can put a awd trans in your car witch is stronger and able to take more abuse then a FWD. but you can't drive it like you stole it. :)

my car is on its third rebuilt tranny and third clutch setup. The previous owner (my neighbor) liked the fact that he could make his 18" rims chirp. He used you creep to 4000rpm in first and bang second instantly flooring it. BLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLUPPPP.
and he was the same one that would say, "you cant drive a dsm like a honda".

Now that i have it, it sits on stock 16"rims, a new clutch setup, fresh gear oil and i granny shift. Numerous times people have almost rear ended me after i move off from a light, probably thinking im going to keep momentum as i shift into second...LOL

I love to my car too much to put holes in my tranny.
