How much and how long did you get your paintjob for?

I've done simple resprays of base/clear for 1K. If there was absolutely zero bodywork I MAY do $900...I've never had someone tell me they need no bodywork and that actually be the case however. For the paint jobs I do to my own car I charge anywhere from $3500-5000 depending on the vehicle. That's all molding off and every seam with enough clear to buff to a mirror shine without worries.

I've heard Maaco does some dirt cheap single stage paint jobs....I've also heard varying reports on how long they last before they go bad.

A good painter will charge you a lot for a good paint job. Paint is one of the few areas it really pays to know someone well that you know will not cut corners. There are so many ways to cut corners and they all will bite you in the end.

Prep as much as you can yourself. It will save you a good amount in the end. Sand as much as you can and remove all the trim yourself. Paint costs a lot because it takes patience to do it right and for people to have patience, they must love their job or they get payed very well for what they do and rely on a good reputation. As stated above, this is a great area to know someone who will do the work right the first time or someone with a great reputation.

Agreed. Good 2k urethane paint jobs shot by an experienced painter is going to cost you around $1500 if there isn't any major repair work needed. Paint is the single most labor intensive thing you can do to your car, and that is what you are paying for. Labor. I shot my own car with a 2k pearl for about $350 total, but I did all of the work and already have the tools needed.

It is indeed expensive. But as mentioned, it is VERY labor intensive because you have to (and usually want to) get all the dings and dents straight, and make sure the surface is prepped right otherwise the final product won't look good.

A couple grand is usually a "starting" point for a decent paint job. Maaco is very cheap, but it doesn't last long. I had my old shadow resprayed at Maaco. About 4 months later, parts started to chip off.

Body work is really a "you get what you pay for" thing.
