How many of you have really broken shift forks or rails?

Ok I have a 91 A/T AWD TSi.

I decided I wanted a 5 speed so I bought a 92 tranny off a friend of mine. I got the whole package, tranny, xfer, rear end and so on.

I took the tranny down to TRE to get there basic rebuild with Evo Shift Forks, Steel Rails, GVR-4 First gear and Torington bearings.

Well I get there and they totally ripped the tranny down in 10 minutes. Went threw it and picked out all the things that needed to be replaced.

First gear was bad, second was bad, the 1st/2nd slider and shit was bad, front diff... Anyway after we got all that out of the way and picked out the parts to fix that I told him the other items I wanted.

He was like naw you dont need evo shift forks, dont need steel rails, dont need the gvr4 first, all you need is the basic rebuild and maybe the torington bearings. Maybe HD 3rd and 4th if you wanna spend another $250...

Jon said no one ever breaks the forks and rails unless they BEAT THE CRAP out of there cars.

My other friend said bullshit. I've broken 3 forks and I dont beat mine.

What do you guys think? Both Jon and Ming said I didnt need that extra shit. Should I just do it anyway?

I personally never have but I've heard of several people doing it. Might as well do it while it's apart.

I absolutly powerderd a shift fork, and my syncros were not worn as bad as I have seen. I replaced it with a stocker and it's been okay for three months. But if it's apart, might as well do it right, and do it once right.

The gvr4 first gear has been known to break, its not as strong as the original DSM first gear.

ive heard of a 2 people trashing shifting forks but thats bout it... i broke a shifter cable once which was sorta surprising to me

My shift fork is taking a dump on me right now, and I know of 2 others that replaced the shift fork instad of having to rebuild the whole trannie.

I figure if many sites (MachV, SBR, RRE) have articles about how frequently they break, and encourage a new one any time the trannie is out "for insurance" you should do it.

I put on my pants one leg at a time, just like you. . . But once I get my pants on, I replace "for insurance" parts on my DSM.

I ended up putting in EVO Steel Shift Forks when I rebuild the tranny.

I still havent installed the tranny but I'm sure they will work good.

Depends on how you drive. But if Jon and company puts on super duper impossible to break forks and gears, how will they ever make money from you again?

i snapped a fork in one of my old nt tranny's about a month after the 2002 shootout.

Not me, but a friend of mine snapped a shift fork on his '91 TSi, and he doesn't beat on his car all that much.

I have my 3-4 rail bent now. I have to shift about 4000rpm for it to go into gear, lower then that and it loves to kick out. What a PITA. Oh well trans is coming out for a Marco special...

I broke the 1-2 shif fork on my 92. Was doing a 2-3 shift @ 7200 RPM and I don't beat my tranny. Hell then the car was almost stock cept a few minor bolt on's and a EPROM ECU. If shifting at high RPM's is considered beating on your car then that I do on a regular basis. WHY?? I don't konw cause I can I guess. I'm just replacing with another lower miliage tranny. I had 130K on my tranny when the fork broke. The wear pads on the forks didn't look to bad either considereing the milage. once I have $4K laying around to throw at the DSM I'm going with a Dogmission. Then I will beat on it constantly cause agin I will be able to. :thumb:
