1G How I lowered my coolant temps 6 degrees!!!

Guys, I need your help! Right now I have everything out of the way in order to take out the a/c compressor, but I can only see one bolt and it is on very tight. I broke my wrist and have been in a cast since february, so I only have one good hand to work with. I have a friend coming over tomorrow to help, but I need to know any tips for getting the compressor out. Do you attack it from the passenger side? How do you find the other bolts? There are 4 bolts correct? Thanks.

I went from the passenger side to pull it. To undo the bolts, just ram your hand down in there with ratchet in-hand and feel around for the bolts. (from the drivers side top) Using a shorter socket will help. If you get your buddy to do that part, you could take off the wheel, and you could guide the socket onto the bolts. That definitely helps. :thumb:

They are on there a bit tight, and there's not a hell of a lot of room, but they'll break free. Good luck, its not too hard to get it all out.

Yea, I actually followed what you had said there and I got all that crap out of the way. I'll try the wheel thing as well tomorrow.

i was talking to my buddy today and he says he uses NO water wetter or anything like that. he put in 1/2 a gallon of antifreeze and it lowered his coolant temps from 209-213 to 203-206. im going to try this then im going to try pulling the a/c compressor. He also said he pulled the a/c compressor and it didnt help him solve his problem with getting a little hot. it actually stayed EXACTLY the same. weird....

It works because water wetter actually decreases water's natural thermal capacity. It prevent corrosion and whatnot but its entirely mythical that the product lowers coolant temps.

Proof?

Using less anti-freeze lowered the temps because anti-freeze is very bad at transferring heat. That's why people run a "summer mix" and "winter mix".

For anyone that cares, I got the compressor out today finally and you guys were right it wasn't that bad. The worst part was pulling it out. It comes, but that takes some work. All together I've shed a total of what feels like 50lbs (a safe guess, probably more) just getting rid of stuff I don't use. Also, I got the cast off today out of nowhere. WHOOP!

Yea i also did mine about a week ago, and it not bad at all , like you said pulling it out was the worst. best way to do it is zip tie all the lines out of the way and pull the fuel line off the FPR. after that mine came out easy :rocks:

congrats on gaining an easy 5HP+

haha thanks man. I had it out already for an AFPR install so everything was out of the way almost. I think the only gain was the weight loss because there was no A/C belt when I bought the car.

I will see tonight how this works out, just did it like an hour ago

That is weird, after I pulled my condensor, my temps always stayed low and my fans never came on period. I was afraid something was wrong with the fans, but no, I checked them and they were fine. Since then I've done a fmic install and my temps have gone up. I have on 12" FAL fan but temps will rise to 206* and hotter if it's a very hot day in bad traffic. I have a 14" fan on the way, so hopefully the 2 will drop things.

dnhieu and byrd......I guess i'm kinda in the same boat as you guys....not dangerously high temps, but higher than I'd like.

alright time to update this thread. i FINALLY HAVE SOLVED MY PROBLEM!!!!

alright i got off my ass, bit my lip, and got on ebay and ordered a koyo racing radiator. its pretty cool because its 299.99 or best off. so i shot the guy an add for 250 even plus 40 for shipping and i got it for 290 shipped. if anyone else wants one bid lower then 250. he accepted the bid MINUTES after i placed it!! so hopefully you guys can get a better deal then i did. also it came in 3 DAYS and was definetly in my opinion OVER PACKED. it took me 20 mins to unpack the bi*** haha. its got very thick welds (ill post pics later) and would recomend one to anyone!

anyways right now its hot as hell out side 90+++. i raged the shit out of the car and was only seeing 196. at idle i see NOTHING more then 206. during the install i took out the a/c condensor and swaped one of my fans to be a pusher instead of a puller (because of the external wastegate). im also running 100% water at the time right now and no longer have wetter water in it. i was going to buy a bottle of wetter water but i didnt have time.

i still need to get off my ass and make more ducting like boostbinazia has so the air has no choice but to go through the radiator.

Didn't see any gain besides the weight either  . I was looking on ebay for a koyo as well but have yet to get off my ass like you did. Are there koyo knockoffs cause this seems to be too good of a deal -

dnhieu - you have a pm on dsm-racing btw.

The drop in temps was more likely from the removal of the AC condensor than the radiator, although I'm sure it will help keep the car cooler during extended acceleration. After reading what everyone is glad to have their cars run at I don't feel so bad about my coolant temps anymore, especially being a 2G.

Sorry for being a retard - but that would meen that while it's not a knockoff, it's not the koyo that'll improve to the extent that the more expensive one would?

I think i could answer my own question

You are correct, while that is a Koyo, thats just an OE replacement. Your looking for an all aluminum Koyo rad, they have much thicker cores, constructed from aluminum, etc, etc. They usually list around $300 on Ebay, sample link:

i really dont think it was the a/c condensor man. i more along the line think it was the radiator! The ONLY reason i think it was more the radiator is because why am i only seeing AT MOST 206 while at idle? before i would see 230 and if i would let it go it would go more! also this bi*** is a total knock off:sneaky: HAHAHAHA.....

this item is a great buy! IT WAS OVER PACKAGED and by that i mean it took my ass 20 mins to unwrap the bi***. it came in 3 days and just flat out look at the welds on the damn thing. i smell Q-U-A-L-I-T-Y....

I think i could answer my own question

I would message the guy and ask him whether it's the all aluminum upgrade or oem. It says it "Provides 30% more cooling than standard radiators" and the all aluminum one's advertise 20-30% better cooling as well. It does advertise an "oem fit" but all the aluminum koyo's are advertised that way. I also wouldn't judge what it is just from those generic pictures. I think I might even message the guy myself and ask him about it, it could be an awesome deal.

EDIT: I actually messaged him myself, I will let you know what he says about it.

okay more details...

driving around last night i never seen anything over 189 in light traffic and nothing lower then 182 while driving. keep cool boys

I see those "koyo" black radiators looks like stock totally. I always wondered, what these are for (circled red)

I was thinking of removing these on mine (since they're threaded in there) and putt plugs in them, since the tips taht stick out make the radiator harder to put in cause of the intercooler piping. do these actually serve a purpose?

i dont have thoes on my koyo radiator. i have one at the bottom to allow some water to escape through it whenever the plug is slightly unscrewed...
