I just e-mailed RRE the other day about their carbon fiber hood ducts. Rob said that venting the air is EXTREMELY important for keeping things cool. They actually run two of their hood ducts on their 1g racecar.

I trust the word of a professional, so I'll be putting a vent in my hood after my FMIC install or after the first sign of overheating at the road course. Not to mention they're only $90-100 and easy to install!

You probably could It's just "why bother trying" since there's all these FMICs out there! (stock SMIC will *handle* 400hp, it just gets a wee bit warm if you stay on the power for extended periods of time)

I'm going to try and tackle this tomorrow and make some kind of air duct to go behind my FMIC and to my radiator. I have no problems with car temp but is always good to keep the car nice and cool at all times. Thanks for the idea and giving me something to do haha

that carbon fibre hood duct looks rpetty good, Im seriously thinking about getting one now, except I would paint mine to match the hood color. I seen that home made hood duct, is that on a daily driver or a track car?

It looks alot better now. The pics were mid-construction. Hopefully I'll get around to painting it this summer.

btw: When you put holes in your hood, be it a bolt on scoop or whatever, be sure and put it far enough foreward so that if you wash it or it gets rained on, the water won't fill up the top of your valve cover! Trust me, I know... There's nothing like driving home on two cylinders...

Well, i just recently made it back to Va from Alabama (~750 miles) with no heat issues. If you guys havn't done this already seriously look into it.

Went to Advanced and bought a 2g thermostat (stock 2g stats are 180*, stock 1g stats are 194*). I also bought some water wetter and put in the recommended amount and both of those put together dropped my coolant temps 10* from 216 to 206. Next will be the fuildyne and putting holes in the thermostat and see where that takes me.

damn you lucky bastard, i have already put 2 slim line fans (wired them to run all the time), 2 bottles of wetter water, and drilled a 1/2 inch hole in my thermostat.

yeah I read that too, use straight up distilled water with a bottle of water wetter. Thats what Im going to do.

are you talking about with out wetter water and running straight water? if so i pass because the only thing that does is raises the boiling point of water thus keeping my car cooler...

yeah i know, i looked all over RRE's website and couldnt find it. i guess you gotta call them. the only problem i have with a vented hood is what happens when all that water gets on the exhaust manifold? or what happens when it gets on the air filter? other then that it seems like a great idea. i could always get another heat shield but what am i going to do about my tial wastegate or do i not have to worry about that cracking?

both my friends with evos havent had any problems with their hoods, and they are vented. i would imagine wherever the opening is would depend on problems that would occur.

I could see people with, lets say the DNP tubular manifold, having problems with doing a strong run or boosting on the interstate and it starts to rain and you come to a stop and the water leaks into the hood and hits the header with quite a bit of water. Maybe enough to crack it from the exreme change in temps.

damn these things are pretty bad ass. you said they were easy to install? what do you do just cut a hole in your hood and bolt them in? is there a seal around the outside of the vent for a nice clean fit?

I noticed it was on a 1gb dsm but do you think they make it for the flip-up light 1ga's? I'd be interested in buying one. I also like the evo carbon fiber hoods but they look like they are only for the 1gb's also (
