how hard is it to replace valve seals with head attached

there is a write up on these forums showing just this procedure but I think its lacking in a few things. But I understand the cams & camcaps come off, which means the timing would have to get redone.

also mentions using some rope to hold the valves up, not sure whats tied to what though. I also dont have a spring compressor or know what to do exactly once you compress the springs. some extra tips would be great if anyones ever done this procedure before. thanks in advance

The rope is not tied to anything. When the piston is at BDC, you feed the rope in thu the spark plug hole, then rotate the crank so the piston comes up and stops, then you remove the spring retainer and spring and change the seals.

You will need some sort of on the car spring compressor so you will be able to install the spring, retainers and locks.


Then rotate the crank to lower the piston, and remove the rope.

Just make sure you keep one end of the rope out side the spark plug hole...

Ideally you would want to pull the head but it is possible with the head still on the car. I did it on my car with the head still on.

You can use this to compress the springs:

Once the valve retainers are off, you can get a large pliers to pull the valve seals that are currently on off. then use a 10mm socket to put the new ones on. They are snug when they go on, so it does take a bit of pressure. You can rotate the crank to each piston is at TDC when you do it, this will keep the piston from falling.. Since the cams are out you wont really risk any damage to them if you do them one at a time.

U can use the rope method or get a compression gauge minus the gauge. to hold air pressure in the cylinder so u don't drop a valve down the cylinder when u remove the keepers.
I use a snap on valve spring tool kit to compress the valve springs . Used it many times on different cars as well

Compressed air works great. Just unthread the valve out of a compression tester and give cylinder 70-100psi.

It is easy with the right tool. Most shops ask somewhere between 500-1200 for labor. Get your own tool and do it yourself.

Here area tips:

Get a small air compressor. Harbor freight has on for 60 bux. Home Depot sells a really cheap one too.

Get this multiple parts compression tester and remove he schrader valve from the lower part of the compression tester. This will allow you to pump air into the cylinder. This tech Kaye is much safer and much quicker than the rope trick.

Get a this valve stem seal pliers. You will thank your self for it because the seals can be stuck on very tight.

Lube the seals up and push them down to seat them. Use a 10mm deep socket to give it a final seat. Do not beat them too hard with the 10mm socket or you might tear them.

Make sure the piston are down to avoid accident bending the valve when you are removing the retainer.

If you never did a timing. Job before, get the Jayracing timing belt too to make your life easy.

Meh on the seal pliers.... I have used several sets and brands over the years, busted them all on tight seals, plus you have to squeezes the side of the seal, and that just increases the pressure on the seal to guide.

I prefer the 11" 90* bent nose pliers. This way I can slip the points under the seal and wedge them up popping the seal off the guide. Yes I have busted several pairs of these too.

They can be tricky to fit under some seals, on the 4g, the outer corners, and the 2 seals in the center by the vent.

I got a set from Mac tool. I love removing the keepers with them. On low tension spring heads like sohc Civic and sohc Galant, the tool is great for installing the keepers too. One of my favorite too for sure.

I would try to pressurize the cylinder versus rope trick, from what i've been reading the valve really shouldn't move anywhere when you've pumped close to 90-100 psi into it.
