How does the HKS Turbo Catback sound

I'm in the market for a catback exhaust and I'm torn between getting an Apexi N1 or an HKS Turbo series. I have read about the deep but not so loud sound the N1 makes but after reading the description of the HKS Turbo I am leaning toward that. However, I don't know how loud its going to be and cops in NJ will pull me over if it sounds rice. I'm not going to run a cat on either setup ( the 3'' dp eliminated the cat). I have a 92 TSI.:talon:

It sounds good. LOL. Look on the HKS website for sound clips for an EVO thats what I went off of and it sounds exactly like that. :talon:

thanks bro. I'm just making sure because I don't need any loud exhaust tickets or even worse a no cat ticket. Do you think me not running a cat will make it much louder than normal?

i have a stainless HKS carbon Ti exhaust for my 95 tsi and it sounds amazing. it is really deep at like 3,000 rpms then once you floor it it sounds MEAN it like growls its hard to explain but its awesome. also its not really that loud. even when you open it up its not annoying at all.

I have the HKS Hi-Power muffler 3" turboback with no cat and it sounds real nice, it really is a distinct sound, though I have the silencer on most of the time for street use, but when I have the Cat and silencer on is a rather quiet exhaust even for 3" full exhaust.

You could say it sounds like the HKS website exhaust clip on the evo, but it has a deeper tone and a bit more resonance if you don't use a cat.

If loudness is a big No-no in your area, get a highflow cat and a silencer, I've seen that you don't loose much power from these when used in big diameter piping, it moves your torque on your RPM band and reduces a few ponies on top end but not by a huge difference.

Regards.

I wish I could fit a high flow cat but I have a dp that eliminated it on the car already and it should bolt right up to the HKS catback directly. If I wanted to put a cat on a local shop said that they would make a custom catback for me and include the muffler and high flow cat for 400+tax. The only problem is that the exhaust wouldnt be stainless and thats still pretty expensive. The car would be street legal though. But I've learned with this car that when it comes to quality of parts you get what you pay for in most cases. If I get that custom exhaust in 3 or 4 years it will need to be replaced. However the stainless catback would last me into my next dsm 1g (there will be more). And that leads me back to the car being not street legal:nono: , but with a little more top end power with no cat at allLOL . Decisions decisions.......:talon:

What about a thermal exhaust? I was looking into an HKS carbon ti, but decided against it because I don't really see the need for a carbon fiber exhaust, and I think thermal is a bit cheaper. Anyone know how these sound?

i have a thermal with 3" dp and 3" cat...i LOVE the sound of mine...i could probably make a sound/video clip if you'd like

hey i just bought a dynomax dnx carbon muffler and i was just going to custom up a mid pipe section but it sounds pretty b/a when it warms up. I think that carbon takes a little longer to warm up though but it looks pretty sweet with a black car. yes the carbon cost a hell of a lot more but i fell in love with the carbon fiber ever since i saw the hks one with the burnt tip. I like mine just as much LOL

N1's look really nice, but I dont recommend one....

For a high flowing exhaust, this is a bad choice....It tapers down at the cat, the piping is non stainless steal and there are way too many un-necessary bends....The muffler is the only reason people buy it...Looks nice right? Wait a year or so and see if it rusts...

Try megan Racing....Similar price, same muffler, full SS....My buschur 3" turbo-back only has 2 major bends and then is straight back 3" the whole way....Has a nice Magnaflow muffler at the end which is still agressively loud at WOT (best sounding exhaust in boost) but significantly quiter than others at normal idle *750rpm*

Thanks for the advice. The exhaust needs to be stainless so I guess the N1 is out. And yeah, I like them because the muffler looks pretty sweet. I'll check out Megan racing but I may just get the HKS Turbo.

Dont get an HK$ exhaust, waste of money. Somewhere on RRE's website i think they have a page about other exhaust systems, HKS is one of them because it necks down to less then 2" through the resonaters. I used to have the Hi power one and it sounded good, but once i put a VRS 2.5" straight through on my car there was an immediate change in performance. Go with a Megan racing, ive heard nothin but good things about those.

I know people like the megan racing's, but I'd like to see pictures of them after a winter or two. I have a "stainless" megan racing header for another car and it is getting rusty.

I have the Apex N1 on my car and I like it. The sound and look is good. Rust won't be a problem because the piping is titanium powdercoated and the muffler and tip are stainless steel. And it does not neck down. It does however come with a convenient neck down adapter if you are still running your stock downpipe.

I have the same catback, and I totally agree with you. Damn nice exhaust.

Sorry tho, 2 of my friends had their Apexi N1's rust so bad it grew a hole in the muffler and a new muffler had to be rewelded....Ive seen those mufflers getting rusty all the time
