How do you translate codes?

This is probably a dumb question but I am trying to understand how a datalogger works, like Scanmaster for instance. If it tells you you have a certain error code, is there a chart that tells what the codes mean for say all 2nd gen eclipses? And where do you find this? I am assuming there are hundreds of codes or whatnot and you haveto reference them on a chart. Pardon my newbie stupidity LoL.
