I have a 97 GST and i need to know if my car has abs system because tomorow im going to buy new front axles and the guy at the part shop only brings the non abs one. what are the difference between those two. and how do i know wich one i have?

The ones without ABS will have a ring at the outer end of it where it goes into the wheel spindle that is called the exciter ring that gets monitored by the wheel sensors and those relay info back to the ABS control computer. your car should have abs being a GST but call the dealer and give them your VIN and they can tell you or just look behind your wheel and see if you see a sensor behind the brakes that counts the teeth on the exciter ring.

Or look for the ABS module below the driver's side headlight, in front of the power steering fluid reservoir.

You can also check your fuse box. One prong will be missing if you don't have ABS. Mine doesn't have ABS and we didn't think about it when we installed new axles that it didn't have ABS and there haven't been any problems since. The only difference is the tone ring.

Turn the key to the on position and look for an ABS light. It should come on for a few seconds then go out when you start the vehicle.:dsm:

For 1g's the ABS module is on the passenger side of the engine bay, to the left of the intercooler pipe, in front of the battery.

Dont do that. The funest way to find out is get on a dirt road. Get up to a good speed and hit the brakes as hard as you can. It the peddle pulses and scratches you have ABS. If the tires lock up you dont.

My ABS light has been on for about two years or so. My diagnosis from the dealership was a bad ABS module. The sticker price for it was too high from the dealership, so I just told them I can live without ABS and they can keep their $1300 part.

I thought my car had abs but it doesnt and i bought ABS front axles.... Can i still use these or will it not fit?

oh i now have a 95 eagle talon awd with a 6 bolt swap... Well in the process of the swap

God dammit.

I just finished replacing mine with a pair I got from Napa Auto. I've always been under the impression I didn't have ABS (my fusebox also doesn't have prongs for the fuse). I did a test drive and the light popped up at around 5mph.

I checked the axles I just removed and they indeed do have the teeth...so I guess I do have ABS??? It seems that perhaps the fusebox was tampered with in the past. I can live with the light, but I'd rather disconnect it somehow.

UPDATE
I just went to do some shopping today and ran into a bit of an issue. Like I mentioned above, the light comes up after hitting somewhere around 5mph or so. However, when leaving a parking lot today, I backed out my spot and proceeded forward, but when I hit the first intersection and started to brake (the ABS light still hadn't turned on yet) the brakes felt hard as a rock. I lifted my foot and pressed the brakes again and it worked. It continued to do this while navigating out of the parking lot, but functioned fine after I got up to speed and the ABS light came on.

So it seems like the problem with putting the non-ABS axles on my apparently ABS equipped DSM has to do more with just having the annoying light on. It also causes issues at low speeds when the wheel sensor hasn't recognized that there is no exciter ring on the axles.
