today my power stearing went out and fund out my rack n pinion was leaking fluid so the shop wanted $550 for the fix with a 4 wheel alightment but i already put over 2k into the car just fixing problems over time. Currently my end clutch is bad, rear main seal is cracked because its leaking engine oil, motor mounts are bad, and my IAC is bad on top of this new problem.. idk what to do i want to get rid of this pos but idk how. Anyone have any ideas? btw i drive a 98 spyder gs.

Why don't you learn to work and fix it ?

Most of what you have listed as wrong in not all that intense, You can fix the rear main the same time you replace the clutch.

Most who own one of the DSM cars, bought it so they can wrench on it.

All the info and support you need is here on the fourm.

Slap it on craigslist. List everything new and everything thats wrong with it. I had someone pay $500 for my totaled 1.8 '93, you may have to wait a while and you probably wont get $1500 but if the right person comes along you might be able to get $800-$1000.

well i live in a apartment so it would be kind of hard to do that type of work and second i dont have much tools but the only thing i know how to fix is the end clutch (its automatic) and im going to learn how to fix cars im going to take engine rebuild n repair buti rather have a gst or gsx then waste more money on 4g64

What are you talking about, all my dsms I've bought with the understanding they were mint, running vehicles. :D

The 4g64 wouldn't be a horrible place to start. Pull that engine, drop in forged internals and a 4g63 head and you have a 2.4L ready for boost. You could then pick up a wrecked shell and do an automatic awd swap. Boosted, 2.4L, awd, drop-top. I've got 2 spyders, both are/will be awd, and they're fun.

Well, You can't have all what you want at the same time.

You have some easy options.

1,--- Call the junkyard, (cheap price).

2,--- Pay to fix it and sell it, ( You will pay for labor and once you sell it, you will end up with the same or a little more money then giving it to the Junkyard).

3,--- Sell it as is, (you will get the same or more money what the Junkyard will give you).

And the last and the Hard choice you have is.

4,--- Find a garage with a friend, buy the tools and repair it your self, (you can find cheap parts at the Junkyard), Once you repair it, Sell it, you will end up with enough money to buy another one, (if you are lucky you might end up with a nice looking car).

il ###### just work full time since next week is my last week for school and then junk it in feb when it needs the smog and il have enough from taxes and my job and then il get money from school in feb so il save up for a gsx or gst.

Try to keep it up and fix what ever you can fix and once you have the money and you have found the GSX, Try to make a deal and trade it for the GSX, (Obviously with Money on top).

But for now at least buy some tools and work on it to start learning about the car which you will need that knowledge once you get your GSX.

Good luck on the sale.

Turbo models mean there's more stuff to break and go wrong. You have to be even MORE dedicated to maintain one of thems. Usually they're in even worse state of repair because they're a turbo coupe owned by people who, guess what, weren't dedicated or gave a damn. Most of the time, it's lame cowboy fixes all over the place, and things are falling apart.

Find a good one, and you'll be paying through the nose, but that doesn't negate the fact that eventually, sh*t will blow up.

I remember when I bought mine, not realizing just how much work is needed for a DSM nearing 20 years old (bought the '91 in 2008).

^+1 My Spyder GS has been the most reliable car I've ever owned. Nothing but oil and spark plugs every 4-5k. They're insanely simple and easy to work on. So if you can't keep a 4g64 running and driving by your own hands, I'm not sure how you'll keep a turbo model going.

That sucks. Does your complex have garages? Rent one?

I too live in an apartment and have 2 dms's and a truck. I'm Only allowed 2 vehicles through the association (Fight the power :hellyeah:). Do you have a friends house you can work on it at? or maybe even rent a garage at a storage facility. Unless this is your only car, if it is then i would recommend trying to sell it on craigslist to see what someone would pay for it.

No kidding. I bought mine in february with 10k on a rebuild and no turbo shaft play. Since that time, ive replaced the turbo from excessive shaft play, fixed the ground trace on the ecu, replaced the bottom end after spinning a rod bearing, and a host of other smaller issues, all on my own. And some others on this site have even longer repair lists, including wes ^ here

:thumb: I hope your insurance company doesn't find this post after someone steals your car for real and torches it.

Lol so true.. Wes said it best though. I understand where your coming from though. Once your car becomes FUBAR you lose motivation and the want to on fixing it. Especially if the car doesnt mean anything to you. If you have some back up cash sell it for a $1,000 and cut your losses. Then get on the hunt for a 1G Gst or Gsx. They can be had for pretty cheap if you look hard enough.
But just because your getting a "new" dsm doesnt mean things wont break or go south on you. All of my friends talk shit about my ride cause im always wrenching on it, until they ride in it that is LOL. Learning Dsm's takes a LONG time, ive been fooling around with these cars for 4 years and still consider myself a noob when it comes to them. Find one you want and stick with it, its the only way youll ever get any enjoyment out of a dsm LOL

Thats exactly what I did after assessing that the 1g auto I picked up 1 month prior required new shocks, springs, ball-joints, etc.... It was like the previous owner did absolutely 0 maintenance since it had 50k miles (it currently has 118k). Its a Midwestern car and has a TON of rust underneath the car, so i just went and bought another 1g without all of those issues. You can find a decent body for a good price.

Are you kidding.?! I got mine because it was fubar. I work on it, get mad, call it bad names, and repeat the next day. I think eventually it will get tired of the verbal abuse and start cooperating LOL. The best advice I can give the op is this: find someone close (geographically) and ask them if you can hang out. Hell push a broom for them and ask questions. I'm on my first dsm and know squat about them but I found a guy on tuners that was willing to let me pick his brain that's been an awesome resource. You can get tools at any flea market and there's harbor freights popping up everywhere. Snap on is not a necessity. Good luck with it whatever direction you go.

thanks for the info guys and i do want to work on my own cars thats why im going to school for more knowledge about cars but i want to specifically learn DSM's and my goal is to build my own 6 bolt but its hard cause this is my only car so i plan on getting a toyota avalon so i can have a daily driver then save up for a 2g gsx and run it till the engine dies and make a 6 bolt from the bottom end up, i want around 300hp to the wheel for a nooby start. one thing is i need to read everything about 6 bolts and understand them more and get the tools il need for repairing/modding.

If you own a dsm....then going to school for auto mechanics is not necessary. The dsm will teach you everything you will need to know. It being your only car just means you will need to learn to work efficiently. Start off at the crack of dawn and into the wee hours of the night until the job is done. Everything you listed that needs to be fixed could be knocked out in a day easy.

Get yourself a 3/8 metric socket set, normal and deep wall, 2" extrension, 6 or 8" extension, a good 1/2 breaker bar, 1/2" 17, 19 and 21mm sockets. You can get all that from harbor freight for around 60 bucks. That will be all the tools you'll need for just about any repair.
