How bad does timing have to be off for valves to tap?

Like the title says, how off does the timing have to be to have valve tapping? I did it myself and everything looked dead on. I didnt wait for the belt to stretch out as I've read in the forums. Could it displace enough to have the valves tap? I'm hoping its the exhaust manifold gasket leaking which I know is happening. I'm fixing that this evening. Does one tooth off cause tapping? That's all the I could imagine it being

Thank you

I have had my crank 3 teeth off and the valves were fine...just ran terrible

Eh, same here. My auto-tensioner broke while I was driving and my timing jumped just enough to stop it from running, damn I was lucky. :D

But actually I remember there being nicks in the edges of the valves just sever enough for a valve job.

Stock set-up, no problem. But I'm curious abot the forums saying you have to stretch your belt. Any links to that info?

Noise could very well be exhaust leak.

I'd have to do a long search to find it but it said that belt will stretch some after the tensioner is installed and move the timing marks. Not that you had to stretch it. Thanks guys. I thought it would take more for the valves to tap than any misalignment I could have done.

Meh... you've got to remember that the timing belt is toothed; any minute amount of stretching that occurs shouldn't affect the timing. The teeth keep everything synched.

Furthermore, think about adjustable cam gears. They purposefully throw the timing off by anywhere from one to as much as five teeth. I'd say that if your timing is off, and your within approximately five teeth in either direction, your valves should be safe.

Like Terry said, if your timing was off, you'd know it. Your car would run horribly.

Quoted for greatness.

You're supposed to set the tensioner, do enough rotations to get the marks back in place, wait thirty minutes and check the tensioner again. It's not really "stretch", but things are just kind of getting used to each other.

Yes, better descriptor.

Hmm could it be lifter tap your hearing?.. or possibly the inner timing cover rubbing off of the cam gears...

Decided to bring this thread back from the dead LOL. Does anybody know if my car would run badly if my timing was off 1 tooth on my cam gears? I just replaced my timing belt and I think I ended up 1 tooth down on my exhaust cam when I pulled the pin on the tensioner. If anybody could answer this that'd be wonderful. Thanks. :talon:

Thanks I'll fix it ASAP. Obviously I'll take your word for it you do have the fastest N/T so you definitely know what you're talking about LOL. Btw, good call on the region I didn't even think about what I was doing when I picked New England. I'm officially Midwest now:thumb: .

Sorry this is waay off topic but I was looking at your profile and noticed you had a megan exhaust and megan header and I'm wondering if you like how it sounds. I've been thinking about buying the same thing.

Dude didn't you check the timing marks after you pulled the pin on the tensioner? You're suppose to make about 2 full crank rotations after you pull the pin just to make sure (at least I did) because sometimes it will be a tooth or two off. Just go back and remove the tensioner again and check the marks, put your belt back on and do your rotations and see how it looks.:thumb:

THATS why I had to let the cam gears idle for 30 minutes after my motor swap.. I couldn't remember why I did that for the life of me..

Anyways, carry on..

Yea I checked them LOL. The first time I did got it all put on and pulled the tensioner pin I ended up 3 or 4 teeth off somehow. Then I did it again and thats when I ended up being one tooth off. I just wanted to see if my car would run alright or not because in all honesty I didn't feel like taking off the timing belt and re-doing it again. I guess I've been in a real hurry to get my car done, even though its a slow car I still miss driving it. If my motor would've exploded because of the stupidity of me ignoring the timing I probably would've felt like a moron, so I'm thinking it's a good thing that I decided to make sure 100%. Thanks everybody for your input, and for causing me not to make the horrible decision of leaving it one tooth off. And to Paul, sorry about the off-topic post. I'll try to avoid doing that in the future.

Spent about two hours today putting my timing belt on THE RIGHT WAY. Idk why it took me so long but it makes me feel better that it's on right and everything is lined up the way it should be.

It's always best to spend the extra time and get it done correctly. Haste is never a good thing.
