Horsepower W/o Turbo?

There was literally just a thread created about going all motor on a 420a...The record for a 420a is barely 250whp. Its a very poor motor to try and build N/A. I doubt you will even be able to break 200.

Gnerally to make your gs faster you will need to build it with higher compression pistons, lighter rotating mass, more aggressive cams, and reduce airflow restrictions (intake, exhaust).

Do a search in the 420a section for what others have specifically done.

If you want any real power with n/a its going to cost you a lot of money. You won't get any huge power numbers. But if you got the money and are set on the 420a n/a you will need long tube headers a nice intake best internals you canbuy. Biggest throttle body huge cams all supporting fuel mods possibly a standalone or dsmlink. Its gonna be spendy.

if you are making NA hp, you wont need to worry about fuel mods till you get close to 200whp, which is not an easy feat ontop of that, dont worry about dsmlink, get Megasquirt. Also do you plan on competing in the NA scene or just looking for a quick NA DD, cause then you can explore nitrous, or something else beyond turbo

So whats more cost effective a motor swap or turbo want to break about 300hp and have a good daily at the same time. I havent had the best of luck with turbos my first dsm was a 94 talon with a 7bolt...scrapyard built turbo motor that slung a rod at 500miles of being put together:banghead:

Keep in mind a motor won't go out for no reason. Either you didn't follow proper procedures\torque specs or you tuned it poorly.

You wont do a motor swap since nothing drops right in, so that just leaves a turbo build....or a big shot of nawsssss

I believe it is roughly the same amount for turbocharging a 420a and reaching 300hp, as it is to get a 4g63 into the 300whp range. Swapping is not an option unless you have a lot of time and money.

Well he could do the 2.4 swap, it takes a little modification but it's a fairly easy swap. I am not talking about the Spider engine! I am talking about the Cloud, Sebring, ext motors. Just thought I would throw that out there before all you 4g63 guys jump down my throat :p

I have to disagree with this, coming from my own personal experience it would have been cheaper to modify a 4g63. I just wanted to do something different, i like my 420a :hellyeah:

What basis do you have for that claim? Are you really so certain the 420A is a poor platform, or are you just bashing all motor cars in general? The N/A 420A certainly has no less potential than the N/A 4G63; it's a much newer and innovative design.

Ive Got a 97 GS, With Some Small Mods Nothing Pretty, Im looking into buying another 420a block to build, was wanting to see what options were out there without buying a turbo? :ohdamn::aha:

"I/H/E" is the rule for first N/A mods. Look into a better intake, a header, and a new exhaust system (or at least a better muffler).

After you do those, you can think about things like an underdrive pulley or nitrous. If you're really ambitious but certain you don't want a turbo, you might consider a higher compression ratio and a form of engine management.

would you have any idea how much dry shot you could use on completly stock 420a internals?? like 50 to 75 shot would be fine if done right wouldnt it??

sorry to threadjack.

Follow the manufacturer's recommendations. NOS suggests no more than about a 40% increase over the stock engine power; that's about 50hp.

Just to add, the Af/x ECU is an awesome upgrade. Just got mine today from a member on the site, drove about 60 miles LOL and i can't complain. Really feel the power in your mods.

The basis for my claim is....how many 250whp all motor 420a's do you see on this site? How many do you see period? I didnt say the 420a was a poor platform, what i meant was keeping it N/A and trying to get that much power out of it....well you might want to think of changing your plan. Dont turn this into a "4g63 vs 420a" because that was not my intent.

How many all motor I4 engines do you see making that much power in general? Not very many... it's not just the 420A, it's any engine that size.

It certainly sounded like it. You should choose your words more carefully in the future.

also take into consideration how many people have actually seriously attempted to mod a 420a NA (from a dsm perspective) and you may find a reasoning to that...
