Honk! What? Honk! What? I can't hear you, that must be a DSM horn [Merged 1-8]

Hey guys, my horn sounds like it is shorting out funny before it powers the horn. Both horn switches completely depress but the horn will sputter, like a dying animal or stuttering engine. It is not loud either, and can barely be heard in the cockpit. Where should I start?

Also, I think the horn is suppose to be two tone, and it is only one tone trying to make its way out.

I think all our cars are like that, mine sounds like a tug boat and my friends sounds the same.

same here..my horn sounds horrible. i never rly looked into it much tho but i know ### yours sounds like

Ah, you got the Deluxe Triple Volume version. :thumb:

Still, it's rude to brag.

Head over to Harbor Freight and grab anything:

2G turbos only have one road horn, in the lower left behind the bumper cover. IC plumbing chased off its mate from the right. The goddamned alarm horn on the firewall is three times as loud, but they don't use it for the road. No idea why not.

Ok, sweet, thanks for the input. Guess I will have to deal with the one tone horn, small price to pay for a turbo!

Hi.
Guys need to fix my horm right, I checked the switches there ok. checked the fuse there ok, So i need to check the horns themselves. but I can't for the life of me find them in the engine bay. I read the various articals on horn fixes, and one said they were located under one of the headlights but i can't find it.(do you have to go from under the car or what). The car is a 95 GSX with the factory alarm.

Thanks in advance

One is right behind your battery, and one is right behind the drivers side corner of the bumper. (its roundish looking)

To check the switches, hook up a voltmeter to the harness that plugs into the horn, then have somebody press the horn button to see if voltage registers.

To test the horn, hardwire the positive and negative to the horn itself. But beware, its loud.

Thanks for the qwik responds,

I found the one behind the battery because it sounds when i set the alarm off, but the one behind the bumper. Do have to go through the wheel well to get to it or should i be able to get to it through the engine bay

You can get to it from under your car. Its black and swirly.

This is the High note horn, and mine went out last year. Its just one bolt and harness to get it out. You will see it.

Thanks, that's what I thought.

BTW: when i get the horn out can i test the horn by like just hooking it up to a battery jump box to see if it sounds. (not sure by what you mean, hardwire the positive and negative to the horn itself)

Thanks again

By hard wire, I mean getting 2 wires and touching the positive terminals together(battery and horn), and touching the negative terminals together.(battery and horn)

I would be sure to check the harness as well. You wouldn't want to buy a new battery and have it still not work.

Ok, the horns are good. but i think the horn in the front bumper is not getting any power. I have a multi meter (althought i don't know how to use it very well, really not a wireguy) but i cycled through all the setting to measure current, while my daughter pressed the switches an i got no reading at all. So only two things left, The horn relay because my 95 GSX has the factory alarm. If anyone knows the location of said relay that would help. Lastly the front horn ground wire. Where does it ground to?

Thanks Guys

BTW: diablos991 my horn is located on the passanger side corner of the front bumper.(it's all good bro but i thought i was going stone stupid. It took 20 minutes of stairing at the a/c evap. before it hit me, maybe it's on the other side. LOL thanks bro

Ha ha, sorry. I wonder why mine is on the drivers side. Weird.
But your switches in the steering wheel could be bad too. If you aren't getting current to the harnesses, then there is a problem somewhere betweent the switches and the harness.

Nah, switches are good I did a continuity on them. But the weird thing is that when i intentionally set off the alarm. The horm behind the battery sounds but the horn in the bumper doesn't, and of course when i pressing the switches i get nothing. That's why i think there is a problem with the relay. but the problem could be in the wires itself. does anyone know where this relay is?

Thanks

The theft alarm horn and the normal horn are separate horns (not connected together). The normal horn has a fuse in the engine fusebox labeled horn. It's relay is the middle row far right one in the same box.

Great thanks.
Now how do you check if the relay is bad or can you check if it's bad? You know you just can't look at it and tell like a fuse or should i just head out to the dealer and order another?

Thanks
