I read that you can have hks 272/262 combo on a stock head, but what if you have a stock bottom and head?

I found a deal on these so I wanna get em, but I know when I do I'm gonna want to install it to get that sound and get that broader power range.

So yay or nay?

I agree completely. Depending on what turbo you are running you will only get very minimal power gains and if you don't have a type of engine management system to control the idle then you're car is just going to die at every stoplight. I would say if you have a really good deal for them then go ahead and get them but I wouldn't suggest putting them on until you upgrade your turbo and engine management.

I think you mean hks 264/272 combo. Yes you can run them on a stock head and bottom end but I would always be one to recommend that when ever you go to do any kind of modding make sure you have done the full maintenance check to make sure everything is in proper working order. Also if your motor has a lot of miles i would at least change out the springs and retainers even if you don't have the budget for dual springs and retainers. I would at least freshen up the motor.

I also agree with the above posters in that you should get some kind of ems even if its just a safc or something not pricey. I have the 264/272 combo in my car and I absolutly love it but i have all the supporting mods as well.

Well so far I have:

14b
190 pump
mbc
boost gauge
2 1/2 exhaust
ported turbo/mani/02
pocketlogger
safc2-not installed yet

I do have a lot of miles, about 160k. So freshen up a little then cams?

By the way, new bc cams and ffwdconnection's dks cams are super cheap. I know HKS is awesome, but if he's not selling them comparable to $350, look at other options too. Just trying to help ya out!

I don't know what turbo you have because your profile isn't filled out, but you don't need cams until you're flowing a lot of air and have a good engine mgmt system installed.

I disagree with not installing cams until later on. The 264/272 is a REALLY mild cam setup which can be dropped into a stock motor without a turbo upgrade or engine management. I see no reason for which an engine management would be required, as these cams will idle nearly like stock and require no degreeing.

And to the original poster, even something as aggressive as a 272/272 can be used on a stock head. When you do something like a 280/280 setup, thats when you start needing head work. I ran the FP2 on a stock head with no float.

For my car the only things that I have done for the engine is:
HKS 264/272
Stock block
Stock head
APR head bolts
OEM MLHG

I have been running on this set up for a couple of years now and have not running in to any problems what so ever. I also have a SAFC-2 that not have been tune and is zero out.
I have the about set up before installing my cat-back Apex-i N1. It was pulling really strong. With the cat-back installed it was a world of a difference. It had a better pull upper RPM. From my guessing HP numbers, I'm about where the WRX are :D

Both 264s and 272s and any combination will run like stock. The stock ISC can adapt jsut fine to these cams. Your stock t25 will be hating life overrevving every time you run her to redline.

You won't reap the benefits of a cam upgrade w/ stock injectors or the stock turbo. You already have an SAFC so you have fuel management that can work well w/ up to 650cc injectors. Obviously you don't mean to upgrade cams w/out running more boost and pushing more air than what stock injectors can handle. So w/ a minor turbo upgrade, you're on the right track for a very quick daily driver. . .

1) 650s, 2) an ebay fmic, and 3) a cheap 14b (w/j-pipe and oil lines) will make you smile w/ your current parts list. I say 650s because the $150 14b will get boring after about 3 months. . . Then you'll want an evo3 16g, for which you'll already have the lines and j-pipe. You can run w/out the water lines. . . But I don't recommend it. Do alittle more searching.
