hit rev limiter for the first time by accident

i was trying to get in front of this dick on the road so i could get to my exit on the highway, and when i went from 2nd to 3rd, i missed the shift and when i hit the gas i went all the way up to 7.5k rpms, and i hit rev limiter... the car studdered and like back fired and i popped it into 3rd and kept going. i usually shift around 5.5k rpms, so i dont know what ill effects hitting rev limiter might do. i didnt hold it at the rev limiter, and it only bounced off like 3 times. did i do anything bad to my motor? also i let it sit for about 6 minutes after i got home to cool down, then i turned it off. i think it sounded different, but that might just be my paranoia (most likely). do you think i did anything? anyone?

i just brought a 97 gsx and i was just wondering when the motor redline because i don't want to reline the motor by trying it , i love this car!!!:dsm:

hey, see your tach in your car? Now look and see where the redline is? That would be redline. Don't go over that. This rule applies for most cars.
 
Yes your defently being over cautious. I use the 7500 redline in first, second & sometimes 3rd on wot pulls. They have a rev limiter for a reason. I once did the missed 4th and hit second shift, obviously only happened for a split second as I put the clutch back in a soon as I heard the revs but when I recalled the peak rpms I hit 8600. I know of several people say that they have missed shifts from 8500-9000 at the track and havent done any damage.

Redline on the tach shows 7000 but the actual redline is 7500, which you probably wont see much of till you scrap the too small t25 ;)

well, I know that. this happened nearly 2 years ago ROFL

That was the first time I ever hit rev limiter and definately not the last... oh and shifting at 7k is my buddy... hence the track time over there.
 
I have the stupid floor mat thing! It moves around ALL THE TIME, how annoying. Anyways I still havent taken my car past 5500 LOL. I don't know why I worry I used to hold my 240sx at 6k and it had 40k more miles! I have a quick q to add. Is it because my car is FWD that it seems to take a lot more to get going?? My 240 would roll off the line at liek 1500 but with my eclipse anything under 2k makes the car shudder.
 
I have a DSMLink log of a miss shift from 3rd to 2nd. It went to 10,000 rpm. When I changed flywheels latter that month more then half the bolts were lose. Don't get scared just hitting rev limit won't do that, but a hard miss shift can cause that.
 
Darn you guys don't ever get an ECU with a stutterbox if your nervous about hitting the rev limiter. I hit it every gear when I'm driving hard, keep the throttle planted, stab the clutch, TMO stage 3 ECU lowers the stock rev limiter to 6k RPM , car sputters, shift, then off you go!!:rocks:
 
One time i was late for work and i was in two lanes of slow a$$ traffic, I don't usually drive like a complete asshole but this was one time i kinda felt i had too ( it was fun as hell though,, but i don't want to ever do it again!haha) i waited till there was enough room to squeeze by (foot or two on either end tops) these two cars and dropper her in second. Kept it matted. When i passed those guys i did another two passes like that switching lanes and at the end of the last pass i felt my car lurch and lose power and i looked and i was coming down from 7300, this was in a 420a and my engine is still fine! So you should be golden!
