I have noticed that while driving my 92 N/T on the interstate at around 70 give or take that my rpms are just over 3000rpms. Is this normal for these cars or not ? Could my exhaust leak from the downpipe be causing this? Thanks for the help,
Devon

dude....no its just you....what gear is your car in and also is it automatic? but other then that it most likely normal unless its auto

It is a manual and i have it in 5th gear the clutch seems fine i have no problem getting it in and out of gear but i don't know the guy i bought it from said it was going out but i thought he was stupid...maybe im the stupid one:confused:

well does the clutch slip at all like under a hard load like it climes the rpm and feels like its going no where?

Yeah it kinda does now that you mention it....i usually shift at right under 3 grand in all gears 1st ony goes like 15 mph 2nd goes 20-25 3rd goes to about 35 fouth 45 and then 5th drags out for a while so maybe i need a new clutch. What do you guys think?

~3k rpm at 70 sounds about right, although I've never had a n/t.

This does not, I repeat, NOT mean you need a new clutch.

You would only need a new clutch if that one was slipping.

Yeah i called my cousin who has a 90 tsi and he said that i could def see if it was the clutch if in 4th or 5th gear i was going at normal speed and then floored it. He said if it took off its not the clutch but if rpms climbed and it didn't really go then its the clutch. I will try it tommorrow.

Before you start buying anything, make sure the clutch is your problem...

If you are driving in 5th and floor it, will the rpms go up while the speed stays the same? That would be a slipping clutch.

TSITuner4Lyfe69: I don't see anything in lunchboxishott's posts to confirm that the clutch is slipping, or that he is sure what the symptoms would be.

EDIT: minute too late

I pull 3 grand doing 70 if it helps any. i'm AWD though. FWD Turbo cars run less at 70 (they have a taller overdrive). not sure on N/T i'm sure its in here somewhere

Yea everything is fine given the nt's gear ratios. My turbo car runs about 3300 at 80mph and the nt's gearing is shorter so 3000 at 70mph should be just fine. For about $600-1000 you could swap in the turbo fwd trans and parts and get the rpms down to maybe 2800 rpm but it would be a huge waist and would reduce acceleration.

Yea i will just stick with what i have. I would like to do some simple mods to the car and give it the "$50 paint job" and save up for a a Tsi or GSX.

Damn nice car by the way mavesty.

This is normal for the RPMs of a non turbo. I had a N/T Eclipse for 3 years and at 70mph thats where they used to be at. You dont need a new clutch, unless under a hard load the rpms shoot up and the car doesnt go anywhere. You probably wouldnt notice if the car was slipping in 4th or 5th but most likely 3rd gear.

All right i will try it in third because getting on the interstate in 5th when i stomped it the rpms and the mph both went up slowly

$50PJ FTW :D

I'm looking into doing that myself... I'd look for an april+ 92 see if you can get the 6/4 combo...at least that's what I'm looking for.

Defiant may be posting in the middle of the night, but he's still right.

My AWD Talon cruises at 80 MPH at just over 3K. It’s an Auto with a high stall TC.
100 MPH comes on at 4000 RPM pulling a vacuum (In Montana moderators).
That’s not a bad thing.

Your clutch may or may not be bad but please don’t replace it to lower your RPM’s on the highway.
