Ok, this past weekend I tried to install a black vinyl headliner using Spray Adhesive. Well......the vinyl is either to heavy or the glue sucks...I'm guessing the vinyl is to heavy. So tomorrow I need to take it off and get some other kind of material to redo the headliner in. Any suggestions?

*Note* interior color scheme is Black, Grey, and Silver/chrome.

spray one coat on the vinyl and then 5 min after spay one on the headliner , then when they are both tacky to the touch , slowly apply the vinyl , use a roller to get all the air out , should stick on pretty good

i did that, but the vinyl is to hard to get even without creases and such so I'll just go with some new material.

I had the same problem, I tried using 3m and Elmers spray stuff, and my fabric fell off after a week in the car. So I went up to the Ace, and bought a small tub of the carpet glue that I use when I build speaker boxes. Its a paste form, spread it real thin over the headerler, make sure that you press it into the headliner though. The little bit of foam left over from the orignal headliner will cause you not to get good contact with the new fabric. If you use the carpet glue (I picked up a small tub for $4 at Ace Hardware), it will work great on vinyl.

hey

I had same problem. my fabric is pretty heavy its like velvet but I typed 3m spray and other things but I found out that once the headliner is in the car and it heats up, it melts the glue/3m spray stuff, so I went to autozone and brought a headliner glue that is specially made for the headliners/hi temp stuff. so then I put bout 3 coats and slowly put it back together with no bubbles or anything in it. Its been 3 months and It didnt fell down.

just my $.02

The best glue to use is the high temp stuff. I do A Lot of custom vinil work in cars, and usually the tannu cover adhesive, looks kinda yellow, and comes in a 5 gal. container, works the best. You spray it on with a paint gun. It will never fall off then. If you have to use spray glue, 3M Hi-Strength 90 is pretty good.

on MGBs we have to use contact cement when we replace the tops.
what ever you use dont use 3m 77. that stuff is temp sensative.

get high temp and you'll be fine. if it works in a black vynyl interior on a 110 degree day with the windows up (probably 130 or so) it will work on your headliner. The vinyl onan MGb top is really really thick and heavy/

thanks for the replys guys, my neighbor has some brush on cement glue that I might try. I decided to not use the vinyl anyways because it's to hard to get right without creases and it makes my car 100 times hotter so I switched to some silver velvet which should look nice and it's much lighter and thinner. I'll post some pics when I finish.

BTW, would you yall recomend scrubbing/sanding the remaining foamy stuff left over from the OEM headliner?

Definately man as Defiant said, I am not sure if you are using this guide but try it, it helped ALOT when I did my headliner, only thing it fails to mention is that get a high temp glue so the new fabric wont fall down. I learned that the hard way. but here is the link if you wanna quick look at it and see if u wanna do any of those steps, its for 1G cars but shouldnt be any different except the part about taking the headliner off since they might have different screws etc.. here you go http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=124198&goto=newpost ( same link as igopoopy posted) but check it out anyways.

whats the best method of getting the foamy crap off? Seems like sandpaper would ruin the actual molding itself.

Try like a brush with metal wires at the end? the one I tried was small about half the size of a comb and had metal teeth so all I had to do was clean that and viola it came out. dont use sand paper LOL. may be even an old toothbrush ?

gl with the project
