Ok, my car has been in the pain shop for the last two weeks. i went to go pick it up today. when i went to crank it, my car just made a whirring noise, sounding like its coming from the starter maybe? all of my oil lights and things came on inside the car, but my cd player wouldnt come on either. i kept trying to start it, and it just made the whirring noise, and the engine fans came on. i looked at the temp gauge and when i would crank on it, the needle would go all the way to the H. i dont know if that matters or not, but ive never noticed that. So i thought, what the hell, i will try and jump it anyway. so i did, and when i hooked the cables up, it started sparking really bad, and the plastic around the jumper cables actually melted! ive never seen this before. any ideas at all what the problem is? please help!!!

can accidently switching the positive and negative cables on the jumper cables actually MELT them and cause them to smoke and smark alot??
