OK, so I don't know where to begine. But I have the chance to buy a 95 GSX for cheap money. The owner doesn't know anything really about it. It's having some issues. Now from what I can tell from pictures, it has a 1g 6 bolt in it. Its actually a Cyclone, but that doesnt really matter. Anyway, the guy said it ran great when he first got the car. Then i guess he said his idle was erratic. It would sit up at 3k, and then slowly come down to about 1200. It never dropped below that. Then he one day he was driving and the car would idle like crap, and he says that it sounds like there is a rag over the exhaust. He said it feels liek its running on 2 cyl's. But he checked and he has spark and fuel to all 4. and someone checked his timing and he was told it was good. I guess someone he knows told him the ECU was bad. But that isnt a reliable source. He replaced the turbo with an Evo3 16g. But that shouldnt cause that problem. I'm trying to figure out what could be wrong with the car before I go and buy the thing. I know DSM's pretty well, but I haven't been able to get to the car to put my hands on it. So if anyone can help that would be greatly appreciated. Any info you guys need I'll try and get for you. It has an engine light on right now. I don't know the code. I advised him to get the code and give it to me. Also he is running a 2g ECU. So thats about it.

That's a double edged sword. If you find out whats wrong with it, the owner might decide to keep the car. If the price is right and you can verify at the very least that the car RUNS, than it might be worth it to buy it and fix it. Again, if the $ is right, just bare in mind the cost of getting to run 100% again. With the slew of stock parts availability, my money is on something very stupid. At the very least, though, do a compression test. If compression is good in all 4 cylidners, then the fix for the car cannot be THAT catastrophic :)

I'm not at all worried about the guy keeping it. He's a pretty chill guy. he actually hates the car, and wants me to have it. I own a Camaro that he wants very badly from me. So he wont screw me over. The car will idle all day long. A crappy idle, but it idles. I just didn't know if there was some sort of problem that could be associated with the Swapped motor, or if it just could be coincidental.

I would try and find a 2G MAS from some one local just to borrow and swap the MAS to see it fixes the problem if it does than you know what it is. Also check the MAP sensor and the CAS. Those were the only things I problems with when I did my 1G-in-a-2G.

could be ignition timing... doubtful though, unless he f*cked with it. Mass airflow sensor plug could very well be loose, vacuum leak. I'm doubting its the ECU as 2G ECUs are pretty stable... could be plugs. Could be arching wires. Bad ignition module, or bad coilpack. But I'm going to guess that the answer you are looking for is going to be revealed to you when you find out the CEL code

I did a google search on that code and I came up with this
P1091 Pre-Catalyst Fuel Trim Too Rich Bank 1
But I don't think 1091 is a Mitsu code...

Edit: this is what I found on this site, what type of scanner did you use?

yeah the scanner is obviously wrong. but We're going to assume that it still is having a problem with the Evap Purge system. So I'm just going to remove all of it... problem solved ha.

The erratic idle can be caused by a myriad of things. First things last... Before you buy this car, do a compression test. (as previously posted) If the numbers are solid, start looking at the stupid little stuff that gets overlooked during a swap.

If this is a GVR motor with the silly dual runner Cyclone intake that all the JDM fan boys love, then you could have something as simple as a vacuum/boost leak. It could be an ISC issue, it could be a wiring issue from the swap that just recently raised it's head, it could be one of a hundred things that are easily overcome with some simple troubleshooting and getting into the FSM.

If you're picking up this car for that cheap, annoying things like erratic idle may be worth it. Just try not to bite off more than you want to chew and get drawn into a money pit. If it were me: If it's that cheap and it had solid compression numbers I'd pick it up, get rid of all the emissions crap and all the unnecessary vacuum hoses that aren't necessary and make sure that anything else that sees vacuum/boost is rock solid with no leaks. You do all that and you've eliminated 85% of your potential trouble spots.

Good luck, I hope that it works out for you. I always love hearing of people finding diamond's in the rough. :thumb:

Thats exactly what I've done with all my previous dsm's... get rid of all the vac lines and remove all the emissions stuff. Less to go wrong. So I've told the owner what he can and cannot remove. so we'll see how that goes. I wont know till I get home on Sunday... becing 12 hours away makes it hard to fix it. Also as far as compression its got great compression. I dont have the numbers in front of me as I'm in a Hotel in North Carolina, but I do recall it having good numbers.
