So here's the story. Just put my motor back together. Started to drive it to get a basic tune going. Everything was going good turbo boosting strong car pulling hard. Then all of the sudden there is a whine almost like a supercharger. Get back home rip the intake off notice that vacuum hose to my wastegate had fallen off. Thought instantly I found my problem. WRONG... I replace the line go for another drive still very little boost only until about 4 psi. Checked the shaft play on the turbo very minimal nothing out of the ordinary. Checked my wastegate flapper it moves freely. What could cause this? It is an Evo 3 16g with internal wastegate I appreciate any input!

Kinda sounds like what happened with my 16g. It was fine, fine, fine, then all of a sudden BAM!, my turbo was whining like a three eyed monster on a 350 small block. Just saying that's what happened in my case. Hopefully you aren't so lucky...
You should see pictures of my turbine wheel! Lol although there was a TON of side to side play on my turbo.

Yea I really hope it's not the turbo, I just bought it off the marketplace only ran it for about 1500 miles or so.

Did a boost leak test today only leak I found was a very small one at the top of my injector, took about 15 seconds to go from 20 psi to 10 psi. I also found my coupler from my turbo to intake had a hole in it. Would this cause the whine even know that side sees no boost? Yes it's unmetered air but I'm not sure? Turbo still spins freely very little shaft play, and no smoking? Any ideas?

Took it out for a drive today after boost leak an coupler fixed still did it... Took apart the intake again noticed that the compressor wheel is in fact scraping...more and more shaft play came along. Consider this RESOLVED. Rebuild kit on its way then off to g pop shop to be rebalanced, unless some one else can provide a so cal turbo shop who can rebalance for me.
