Replacing the blance shaft belt on a 4G63 non-turbo Talon I picked up recently, but I'm having trouble removing the outer crankshaft sprocket that allows me to get to the balance shaft belt.

Is there any way to lock the crankshaft, flywheel or the transmission so that I can take the bolt off? Turning the bolt now just turns the crank. Also, is this bolt a reverse thread?

BTW engine is a 6 bolt and non-turbo.

Sorry if this has been covered already somewhere. I looked on vfaqs, but it describes a method for a vehicle that runs so it won't work for me.

If you have the engine out of the car or if you are willing to drop the oil pan, grab something like a long screw driver with a squishy handle, or something to brace the crank and wrap it in an old towel. Use it to brace the crank against something and you can keep it from spinning.

3/4inch socket on a spanner handle with the handle resting on the axle. Remove the MP fuse so the injectors doesn't fire and bump the starter. Pops that bolt loose every time.

BUT .....

You gonna need a torque wrench to put 100ft-lbs back on that bolt and a chain wrench comes in handy to hold the sprocket while putting torque on that bolt.

good luck-DSM

Optimus Prime must have been the last one to work on this car. Bolt was tightened to some insane torque. 7 bolts from now on LOL.
Got it off though using a combination of some of the techniques here along with popping the starter off and locking the flywheel with a screwdriver.

Thank you for the help everyone.

On one of my dsm's I forgot to bump the starter before I had half the car apart (including wiring). My 500ft pound impact wouldn't budge the bolt. Put the transmission in 5th gear, jammed a stick between the brake and seat (would have been easier to have someone push the brake but I was alone) and used a huge breaker bar on it. Bolt finally came out with a huge bang.
