Help Removing Cams

The camshafts are held in by the cam caps on the head. The cam gears are held on by a single bolt in the middle of it.

If you are trying to get the gears off, you will want to use the big hex shaped piece on the camshaft with a big wrench and a 17mm on the bolt in the middle. You could also try to use the timing belt to hold them and have something holding onto the crank sprocket, but you could potentially mess up the belt.

The camshafts themselves require a 12mm socket, don't mess up the location and orientation of the cam caps.

I actually removed my cams yesterday, and it was a pain. Take off your valve cover and there is a hex shape on the cam. Put a 1 1/8" wrench on it and a 17mm socket on the cam gear bolt. You may need a good breaker bar and a little assistance to break it loose. I know I did. After you get them loose to remove the cams you need to remove the cam caps. It is very IMPORTANT to make sure the go back in the same place when you reinstall the cams. Goodluck

Just put a wrench on the cam itself to keep it from moving.

We had to slide a 2 1/2'' piece of rigid conduit over the wrench, and use a 3' breaker bar to get enough leverage. I have taken alot of cam gears off, but I have never had a issue like I did yesterday. Sounds like your having the same issue. The pipe and the big breaker bar did the trick. Goodluck:pray:

You dont need to remove the gears to get the cam out of the head. You can remove the cam with the gear on it, and put the cam in a vice on the hexagonal portion where the wrench goes. Then you can get a better turn on the cam gear bolt.

You don't need the cams out to take the head off either. If you think you have to, yes, you can take the caps off the cams and put them back later. Be careful with the gear ended ones, they have an oil seal you might be able to mess up putting them in and out.

No, the gears dont need to be off. Just take off the cam caps and take out the cams. Also pay attention to where they were because one is for the intake and one is for the exhaust, dont get them mixed up, they arent interchangeable.

yeah its always a good idea to put caps and bolts where they go if possible so they dont get mixed up during the build. good luck with it

Ditto, Im not sure I understand the comment. I mean dont you have cams as well and I sure that they all come out the same, right???

i'm having the same issue.. i have the cam caps off but it doesn't seem like the cams want to come out. is there a trick to it. If i can avoid taking the cam bolt off that would be nice because it's a real pain.

There's not really a trick to it. The easiest way to get the cams out is to grab the cam gear with one hand, and the opposite end of the cam with the other and just pick it straight up. If its hanging at all try pulling at a slight angle and it will come right out.
Bearing caps have come labeled as E for exhaust and I for intake, but also as right and left. R1, L1 etc.
