ok i had to remove the head and have a question.how do you know when the #1 piston is at TDC on the compression or exhaust stroke? or does it not matter? secondly when setting the cams for TDC on the compression stroke,the marks should be lined up with the pin at 12o-clock,and ALL the valves will be closed? when i took everything off i didnt make sure it was at tdc on the compression,well i really couldnt because it jumped time..but thanks for the help.

#1 piston should be all the way up to the top of the block surface for TDC, and as far as for the head the dowel pins on the cam gears need to be pointing straight up.

SO when you reassemble the head onto the block, make damn sure the dowels on the cam gears are pointing straight up and #1 piston is at TDC, what I do is put #1 piston at TDC and lower the piston down just a little bit to put the head on, that way I know for sure I am not smashing the valves, then alinge the timing marks on the crank, just keep the dowel pins on the cam gears pointing straight up at the 12oclock position, then you should be good from there.
