My buddy has a 99 GST with a 16g and supporting mods, he ran a 13.8 this weekend at the track. He has decided to upgrade his turbo and wants a big 16g?!? I gave him my two cents and about 10 minutes of my time, but I don't think he's listening. I told him he wouldn't be able to tell the difference and should go 20g at least. Myself, I would go the 50 trim route, but he's scared of hurting his engine. Anyway, help me save my friend $700 and convince him that 20g isn't too big, thanks.

hes going from a 16g to a big16g??? I dont see any point in it. He wont feel too much of a difference. The 20g would be his best route so it could bolt up to his manifold, and a 20g is definately a proven 11 sec turbo. He will be wasting his money, tell him to look on ebay for a 20g, you can get them pretty cheap.

16G to B16G is a worthless money wasting "upgrade".

But who says he needs a bigger turbo to cut lower than 13.8?

Classic misnomer of "time for a bigger turbo"

He can still drop in time and up in power other ways. How about some HKS 264/272 cams for another 40whp? Does he have an upgraded intercooler and piping? Can run way more boost there too.

If he has to get another turbo the 20G is just fine. Big improvment over the 16G and not big enough to cause worry about the engine.

If he wants to actually "UPGRADE" turbos tell him to go with a mininum of a 20g turbo or even step up to a 50trim turbo since hes already running a 16g. Hes not goign to notice enough difference to actually be happy about this upgrade if he does it tho I'm pretty sure :(. If hes running 13.8's on his engine already he shouldn't be worried about lower 13's on that stock engine because it can be done if you look at www.dsmtimes.org it has the listings of what people are acomplishing on a 16g or even a 20g and some 50trims.

Get him to suck it up and get a 20g so he can actually be happy.
:thumb:

:xnuts: him if he don't get a 20g.
:thumb::cool: him if he does.

Sorry to say that I don't think ebay is the best place to look for car parts in general and escepcially turbos. In my friends case, little to no shaft play to one person can be way to much to another person, this is just one example, but I am sure there are many more, and yes I will agree you can get lucky and get a deal. I look at ebay as a place where people put things up forsale that they know will not sell if seen in person. Just my two cents

tell him to start tuning . a 13.8 is nothing on a 16g, there is much more power to be had. what are his mods? hell a 14b can take you into the 12's if everything is right, it's even easier on a 16G.

Im sure high 12s can be had on a 16G FWD Eclipse? No?

LSD, cams, radials, high boost and good driving.

Certainly not impossible I would think....maybe Im wrong.

What was his trap speed on the 13.8 mph run?

If he's not trapping well above 105-110 mph, then he needs to maximize the setup he has now before he upgrades.

I know who he is talking about and he is still on the stock side mount and hasnt been to the dyno yet. Could probably get more out of the 16g but I would go with the 20g to give options for the future.

We really don't know enough information about the car.

List out all the current mods on the car.

Front mount/tuning/porting/upgraded exhaust parts/cams/fuel at least, all long before thinking about a new turbo.

I wouldnt be too concerned abouth the 1/4 mile time in a fwd. Get it tuned on a dyno and actually see the power it makes. 16g is a decent turbo. If he is really worried about 1/4 mile time he has other things to consider before a new trubo. Transmission, clutch, lsd, tires, suspension. With a proper tune the power is there on a 16g for 12's, its all about hooking up and your 60ft time.

I just want a list in order of what I should buy first, I want to get a 20g turbo in there
