help me out. no tach after engine swap. 1990

Hey, im new, hence the noob thread.
i have a 90 laser n/t 2.0 mitsu we just swapped n the tach aint workin. from what i've read i need to recconect the tach signal wire to the noise filter, but i dont think this engine came from a 90 laser (from what i know its unique to this year)
what can i do to make the stock tach work?
i read another thread on tapping into a green n white wire under the dash but that wont work unless the noisefilter is in right?

i need the tach working, anything helps. if anyone has a picture of the little peanut shaped filter i need pleaase post up thanks lots!

The 1990 model year for DSM's is funny. everything is different, the wiring harness, the coil pack, the gauge cluster, etc...


There is a little box on your coil pack (1990 year only) and it should say something like "Mitsu Tacho" That gives the signal for the tach to work in the gauge cluster.

But we need more information, when was the last time it worked? what has changed? what was the car's repair history?

we bought the car with a blown 2.0 n the dealership gave us a specific number in the vin to look for in donor cars (cant remember which)
so we got this other motor swapped in and no tach. no extra wires, lots of un used plugs (dont know why)
runs just fine.
all other guages work fine.
guna take a look for that noise filter today hopefully
ill take pics. is this site like other forums i just upload to a host site then ad image url through the lil mountain?

Yeah, if you don't have that noise filter then the Teach will not work. I know this from experience

this may b true but there has to b some way to make it work. the engine is out of a 92 (no noise filter. anyway to rewire it to work like off the dizzy or maybe change something under the dash or sumthin?

Did you switch the engine harness and all the electronics to a 92 ? I don't think so, so the fact that the motor is from a 92 means nothing. It's still a 90 car with 90 electronics. You need the noise filter.

no. ecu and harness remain. however the noise filter is attached to the engine, which is a different one!
the 90's are the only year with a tach lead that does not go to the distributer.

The last post in the 3rd link you posted sounds exactly like your problem. The plug is small and can easily be missed. Do you still have the old engine ? If its still attached, take if from there, plug it in and find a grounding spot to bolt it to. ( firewall, where the throttle cable colts to the intake, Ect.)
