Ok so I have a 98 gsx. Car ran fine. I recently rebuild the tranny and welded the center diff ect. After putting the tranny back in, it ran fine for a few days. Then all the sudden it died.
If i try to start the car the engine fires right up, then it idles for approx 3 sec (the same amount of time every time I start it), then dies. When it idles, it idles perfect. It is smooth, at the right rpm and is NOT breaking up or dying at all. It then just cuts off after the 3 sec. It is not a gradual cut off. It is a very quick cut off with no sort of trying to catch itself. It acts like something electrical is cutting it off. It reminds me of a car with a turbo timer cutting it off after a certain amount of time or like if you were to just turn the key off. If you floor it after you start it revs just fine but still after 3 seconds it cuts off like the key is turned off.
The car used to have a turbo timer but doesnt anymore. Used to have msd ignition but doesnt anymore. And it has been running since both were removed. It has safc neo, 650cc, 255 walbro, fmic, basic mods.
Anyway, I can think of what it could be! I was thinking something with fuel pump circuit or fuel pump. But it never hesitates or chugs or dies slowly. It is just like all ignition is being cut. I thought it could be something with turbo timer but that has been removed for a while. I am going to look at ECU next.
I can start it 30 times in a row. And it will do the exact same thing over and over. It never runs any longer or any shorter. Always idles fine and then shuts off like I turned the key off. It Once in a while will stay idling. When it does it will idle forever. But if you drive it it dies fast and then you have to try to restart it 30 more times and sometimes you get lucky enough to make it back home a couple hundered feet. Now if yo ulet it just idle it does so for a very long time, but if yo uturn it off and restart it, it will again take a ton of starts before it even wants to idle again more than 3 sec.
