Went to leav work and my car won't start. If you give it throttle while turning the engine over it sputters and tries to start but won't. Was perfect on the way in! Also I noticed the t belt tension has changed slightly, the slack on the top between the t gears is gone. Usually there is a little slack, and the back of the belt has slack now. Basically it is opposite of normal. Could it have jumped timing upon start up? I'm puzzled here. It was running perfect a few hours ago.

Sounds like you skipped a tooth, check timing on your camshaft gears, if they're ok move on to checking the crankshaft position.

If they did skip, you can
A: reuse the old stuff and just re-time it, and hope it doesn't slip again wrecking the motor.
B:Replace the Tensioner, Timing belt, and Water pump, for worry free driving.

Here you go this guy hit it right on the head, you are better off getting the parts and fixing it then you KNOW you wont have a problem again.

Ok so after checking to make sure it was getting fuel and fire the t belt tension varies. It changes a little after trying to start the car each time, after trying to start it I checked the belt tension and it felt the same as it always has. So you guys think I jumped a tooth? Is that possible just by starting the car? If it jumped a tooth while I was driving I would have known right?

Honestly, stop trying to start it, if it continues to change severe damage can occur.

The 4g63T is an Interference engine, which means the Valves can hit the Pistons, and damage the Internals, Bend valves etc.

Belt tension cannot be checked reliably by feeling it.

1. Remove the Timing belt cover.
2. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left
3. look under the car, see the main drive Pulley? it has a spot for a 1/2" drive
4. Insert ratchet, and extension into the square hole.
5. manually Rotate the assembly, until the Arrows on the camshaft gears Line up.

if they don't, then you'll have to do a Timing belt job.

:( I looked at the pics Just now, and damn i need to clean up my motor.

LOL it dosent look that bad!
Do you guys think this could be crank walk or have anything to do with crank walk? I looked up what symptoms occur when you have crankwalk and my problems are totally different. at least from what ive read. Im just so frustrated bc i have no clue why this happened! I drove the car about 5 miles to get lunch and it was perfect then 3 hours later it wont even think about starting

So, the timing was way off! now i hope i didnt bend any valves in the head trying to start the car last night! if so i guess ill buy a new head! Hopefully i will be ok though, i just ordered all the timing components so hopefully theyll be here next week so i can change them out and get it running again. Man i hope i didnt screw up my head. after i got the car towed to my buddys garage we were checking it out and the timing belt was soo loose i gould get it to jump teeth by hand, my tensioner must have just died on me.

Yup.

Since have to wait a week anyway, now is a good time to just pull the head, and do a rebuild.

It won't hurt, and it saves you from doing the timing belt job twice.
IE: putting all the timing gear back on, checking compression, trying to start it, damaging more stuff, getting the head rebuilt, then putting all the timing belt stuff on again.

IMO pull the Head get it rebuilt, then install the new timing belt, tensioner, etc.

Did you get a Manual yet?

yup i have a manual! so go ahead and throw a new head on there while its down? theres a local shop that sells a head for 350$ has three angle valves. should i go ahead and pick one up?

Up to you on the head, I would pull the old one first, and have it checked before buying another one.

They might be able to salvage yours, or rebuilt it for cheaper.

So I've decided to pull the head off of the car and send it to the guy that's done almost all of my head work in the past. He is local and does amazing work. I'm gonna talk to him about building it up a little! Arnt the cam shafts right there ready to come out after I pull the head? I love the slight lope the cars have that I've heard with 272 duration cams. Could I go ahead and put cams in? Will cams throw anything else off? Will I need to change anything else if I put cams in it?

you have got to be kidding me... always use mitsu components when it comes to timing belts... go mitsu or replace parts again!

272's are good for stock valvetrain, but since you're going there I would get some good springs and retainers...

what does your parts list look like? tell your friend that not alot needs to be ported on these heads, plenty of people are running single digit track times on nothing but a head that is simply cleaned up and polished (on the exhaust side).. I would also avoid bigger valves...

grab a mitsu MLS headgasket

I don't know the OP's driving style, condition of his car, or his level of Mechanical Knowledge. I just helped him Diagnose his Problem, and provided the needed information to confirm it.

I merely Offered a Suggestion on parts, it was simple, and contained the complete parts to do the job, and got best bang for buck.

I'm sure you could argue that Mitsu Timing belts are the best with the guys running HKS, Greddy, or Gates Timing belts. On my next Timing belt Job, I'll be using a Gates Kit.

Got the head removed today!! No valve damage occured. I'm sending the head to the machine shop to have it re worked, ported and polished, 272 cams, litters, valve springs, and possibly new valves! Hopefully my timing gear will be here this week and I can get it all back together next weekend! Thanks guys for all the help.
