Ok so here's the story... earlier in the day yesterday, I was in second gear, and I floored the car and when it got to around 4500 or 5000 RPM's, the car made this really loud sound, that kind of sounded like a lawn mower. I quickly let go of the gas, and just drove normally to my boyfriends house. Later that night, I asked my friend to drive the car for me and see if he knew what was wrong with it and why it was making that noise. He went with another one of my friends, and i should have went with them but i didn't. We get a call from them around a half hour later that the car won't start. He told me that he did the exact same thing I did, but when it got to around 5000 RPM's, the car just died. They tried bump starting it, and it won't start. We had to tow it with our cars back to my friend's house. I was just wondering if anyone knew what this could be. My boyfriend and friends think it might have something to do with the fuel pump. We aren't quite positive. Any help on this situation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Gillian

Did you check your timing belt. My friend had that same problem this week with his Passat. I originally thought it was the fuel pump, but it turned out that his timing belt broke. :dsm:

yea, the timing belt was fine, we checked that. Normally the timing belt is very loose in the beginning while the car is warming up, then it gets really tight and is fine. But when we checked it after this happened, it was tight, and fine, so i don't think thats it.

When you turn the key can you hear the fuel pump pressurize the system? Does the engine turn over when you try to start it?

hi im alex, im posting on my girl friends name, but two of my friends replaced the starter today, and the car is still not starting. it just sounds like the starter is spinning but not catching the flywheel. my friends took out the pressure line on the FP and cranked the car and there was plenty of fuel spraying everywhere. i was not in the car when the car got messed up. but i have no idea what it could be, my friend thinks the teeth mighth have chipped off the flywheel but i dont know how possible this is. just have no idea whats going on with this car. i might have to toe it to my friends house get it on a lift, and drop the trans. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Bump starting it? :nono: You might have had just transmission problems before. Doing that may cause it to jump time. Then you not only have a bad transmission, but a new head to rebuild. Tell the monkeys to keep their hands off of your car. As for the noise, I had something like that on my charger and it was the final gear going out in my transmission. (Sounded like a you are riding a bike with cards in the spokes). I wish you luck because it really sounds like you went from a $500 repair to a $3k repair.

Sounds to me like you don't mind anyone just taking your car out and beating the heck out it. 5K rpm??? Spinning but not really turning over??? Tight belt??

Turn the car over and see if the crankshaft end is turning over. If the starter is spinning and the crank is turning you have lost compression (timing belt spun on the crank) and your valves are bent. How many miles on the belt?

Chack the cam timing by rotating the crank to top dead center on compression. You can use a screwdriver and rotate it over by hand and when the number one piston gets to the top look at the cam gears to see if the timing marks are together. If not then rotate the engine one more time until the piston comes up and check the timing marks again. If neither time the piston came to the top the gears were aligned then you have jumped time and have head damage. If you rotate the crank and the belts arn't moving then you have stripped the teath on the belt. This usually doesn't happen while driving but does happen usually when you bump it or just start it up.

Hope this helps.

ok, so we found out that it was the timing belt. It skipped a tooth, we believe while trying to bump start it. 15 of the 16 valves are messed up, so my boyfriend and friends are going to get new pistons, and other parts needed to rebuild this motor. If anyone has any suggestions, or parts that they know are for sale, please let me know. It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
