I just did the typical thing and jumped from honda to DSM. I like the DSM much better it seems to be built alot stronger. I drive a 1990 TSI AWD. Now i have an issue with it. It seems like bad timing + bad turbo + boost leak. Now i dont know anything about DSMs and ive done research trying to find an answer. My buddy and i both have the same problem cept his is a 92 Convert to a FWD.

1990 AWD Turbo TSI
Manual
NO MODS

I start my car it instantly jumps down to 500 rpm and it idles up n down like trying to stall, it then proceeds to have a major lag to it when i take off at any speed. The car will not go above 5000 RPM. When i get above 3500 RPM in 1st there is a outrageous rattle in the front end like a lose heat shield(which i have checked all and none is lose). The oil filter was lose for about 100 miles but the car was having the problems before hand. When i step on the gas the OEM boost gauge goes up to 4 psi and doesnt move. When i come up to a light and pull it into Neutral the car jumps down to 500 RPM and stalls. The car is a pain in the ass to start. (no check engine Light)

As of now the car will not stay running. and this is the list of things i have checked.

Head gasket
Pistons
Valve cover gasket
Cleaned the Throttle body
cleaned the Intercooler
Checked all air lines going to turbo
Checked the BCS
Air Compression is as follows (Piston 1-138, Piston 2-137, Piston 3-140, Piston 4-142)
Plugs / Wires
Distributor
Catalytic converter
O2 Sensor
Belts (couldnt check timing)

Please get back to me asap, this is my Daily driver. Sorry if i posted in wrong spot im now.

You most likely have boost leaks. It's a good time to perform a boost leak test. Boost leaks kill performance in these cars. The stock boost gauge isn't very reliable. An aftermarket boost gauge is a good investment. As far as the up and down idle, that could be several things. Search this site for "idle surge" and read up. You may find your answer. Probably every possible problem a DSM can have has been discussed and solved on this site.

Right on tunethis. Sounds typical of a boost leak. Be sure to check between the TB and head, as well.

Welcome!

This has been the best looking post by a new DSMer i've seen lately. It was easy to read and he actually used the search function before posting:thumb:

+1 on the boost leak.

Thank you on the positive replys. My buddy with the 92 same problems ordered a boost leak tester and should be here any day now. Ill keep you updated on how that goes. I was also told about a idle control valve that could cause it to do the same thing mine is. Any thoughts?

I just started my car this morning and its running, not very well but its not dieing. I can hear what sounds like exhaust leaking from the manifold (possible 1G crack). Would this cause some if not all of my problems? I am going to still try to get a boost leak test done.

Yes there is 0 upgrades on the car. And i know if i dont recirculate the BOV the car will run like shit because the computer is expecting that extra air. Ive done over 3 hours of research. I havent found the problem yet im about to out and try locate the problem again. I dont know if there is a way to test for thigs at home? I dont have any specialty tools like a boost leak tester or timing light. Is there anyway for me to do this at home? Like crank Alignment w/ pistons or something. Would it be possible to hook up a aftermarket boost gauge and see tell by that if there is a boost leak?

You can make your own boost leak tester. Search for it, there's how to somewhere on here. All you need besides the actual boost leak tester is an air compressor. Good luck and welcome! :talon:

I got videos of what the car is doing give me a couple of minutes and ill have them up. It now smells mad rich. It sounds like a exhaust leak by the turbo. I dont want to pull the manifold off because i dont have another gasket and i dont have extra car right now to go get one. As soon as i ran out of time on the first video the car died again and refused to start for about a minute. In the second video i try to catch the leak sound. As i try to i give you a quick scan of the engine. As i scan the car starts dieing. This is what it does when i put the car into neutral, 90% of the time when it does this the car stalls.
IS THIS A POSSIBLE ICV (ISC)!?!?!

Yes but my compressor is not running. So is this possible to be an ICV(ISC). How can you test those?

It sounds like idle surge. Try adjusting the biss screw on the throttle body and see if that makes any difference. the idle control sensor could be a problem although you sould have a check engine light for that.

They threaded a pen
You cannot be fricken serious... I cant believe i overlooked this but here is your biss screw...:notgood::notgood::notgood:

well it sounds like the same problem that i had with my 2nd gen and i found out it was the IAC ( idle air control module.. after that all the problems went away( if it is the problem) make sure you dont but one from like oreielys or places like that it can cause more problems

Go pick one up at your local dealer.

MD614948 - BISS screw
MD614150 - BISS rubber cap
MD608806 - BISS o-ring (#5)

Holy crap 26$ for 3 pieces of plastic... And my nearest dealer is about 65 miles away. Gas prices too thats like a 40$ part. But ya i just bought this car and who ever had this car before me ####ed it royaly by doing that.:applause::applause:

Could this be my "boost leak".

Most likely.

I can't tell - do you have vacuum lines on the side two ports of the tb? In the third picture in post #16 it looks it, but it doesn't look like they're very far on. Maybe it's just a bad picture and they are fine.

No they are quite a ways on. I saw those too. I cant think of anything else that would cause that bad of a Surge / Leak. Could a Cracked manifold cause it to act this badly? And air leaking out of the Biss screw hole?
