Hello I started my car for the first time today after a rebuild
There was heavy smoke and the oil pressure was at 1-3 at idle and went up as I gave it throttle. Just wondering how low should the oil pressure be at idle.?

Well after the rebuild the rings need to be seated. That smoke could be oil getting past the rings. I am not sure how it will affect the pressure. Hope it helps you out a little.

Yeah I kind of new it would smoke at start up but the oil pressure is what worries me. Not sure it should be that low to start off I know it will be low because of the cylinder walls being honed but it is really low.

With the stock gauge mine sits low at idle, sounds like something is going on, if you have smoke sounds like, a engine or turbo issue, could be a turbo seal, rings, valve stem seals, im not sure why you have smoke.

I guess part of the smoke could be a few things. There was some oil that got onto the engine and I also used a wrap around intercooler pipe coming from the turbo to try and keep part of it cool. Factory oil pressure gauge don't work it's electric aftermarket gauge that is giving me the low readings.

Check your aftermarket gauge and make sure it is correct, or temp install a mech oil gauge.

On the rebuild, did you do a BSE? If so, was it done properly, bearings flipped to block the oil ports.

Did your block come equiped with oil squirters? were they removed to bore/hone the block?

Some smoke on a fresh built engine is common, but should burn off in about 10 mins or so.

Ring seating has nothing to do oil pressure.

Cylinder walls will get oil from oil splash from the crank or from oil squirters.

First the 4g block will not go .20 over, that is over an eighth of an inch.
You mean .020

So your block was a turbo block to start with squriters.
IIRC, the 7 bolt has the squirters in the main webbing.

Were they plugged off, if not, then that would cause the low oil pressure.

Also check the oil bypass valve, this may be hung open.

Most that do a BSE have higher than normal oil pressure.

Do you have lifter tic?

Have you pulled the oil filler cap, and seen oil on the head?
