It's been awhile since I've owned a dsm or galant vr4. I was looking into future mods that ill be doing to my next car and was thinking about doing a mls and headstuds install. Now I see ARP 8740? Is what I had on my last car. But I see L19's are now out. I want to know the power limits of the Standard Arp 8740 vs the L19 if possible. Real world setups and and issues regarding either. Thanks

Its reccomended that anyitme you go over 22-23 psi,you should have aftermarket headstuds. If your build plan is bigger than that get the extra insurance of headstuds.

Myself, I would add aftermarket headstuds just for the added insurance. And I did just that on my own car.

I completely understand that, I had arp in my gvr4, I'm asking about the ARP 8740 vs L19, is making 400whp too much on the regular 8740?

I have a buddy that has a sitting 1g on his driveway because the head began to lift when it was on the dyno. He hit 440hp before the controller called it off. He was lucky but still has the standard ARP head studs. He's now looking for some L19's. It's $160 more than standard but, also consider that they are all you'll ever need.

L19's is it, I'd rather by once and not have to worry.i don't know where my goals will take me so why risk it right ? Lol

When torqued to 75% of the yield strength of 180,000psi, standard 8740 ARP's are good to contain 3500psi of cylinder pressure. That's enough for about 600 ft*lbs of torque.

L19's will only be a slight increase in this.

All engines actually lift the head always while running. The studs stay within the elastic region. However if you have bad detonation while making 600ft*lbs of torque, you could yield the studs and actually lift the head like people say. At the point, the nuts should be loose, indicating a loss of clamp load.
