Header Wrap [Merged 3-8] thermal DEI headers exhaust

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

Summit Racing and JC Whitney have them for order. Of course if you did your own searching you might find some better pricing. Just search on their sites for header wrap.

The only problem that people have is from the heating ans cool cycle. It makes the wrap attract moister that wioll be held againt the metal. If it is made out of mild steel it will rust. Other than that you should be ok just do a nice job. They also have a spray that supposedly makes it water proof.

Waterproof spray? never heard of it

I guess i shlud rephrase that. Not water proof, but water resistant. It basically makes it harder for the wrap to stay moist from the heating cycles. I believe Summit, Jegs, and JC Whitney carry it.

I got my heat wrap from DEI somewhere off the web. Before, when I ran the header on the ol NT after a run, the engine bay was very hot, after taking the header and dp off i wrapped them with the DEI exhuast wrap and used the water resistant spray, that I also ordered from them. Now things are all nice and barely warm under the engine bay. I highly recommend it when going with a header. :thumb:

Hey all.

I just bought a turbo wrap kit made by HeatShield Product, called the Stealth Turbo Kit, part# 300000. Heres the link http://www.heatshieldproducts.com/stealth_turbo_kit.htm

The material has a black cloth side and a aluminized cloth side. No where in the directions does it say which side goes out. I looked on the internet and every turbo wrap kit I could find with a picture, shows the aluminized side outwards. So I went ahead and wrapped my 20g with the aluminum towards the outside.

I took my car out for a couple 24-25psi spools and when I stopped tons of smoke started coming out from under my hood. When I open the hood the aluminized cloth is bubbling, poping, and smoking like mad, I think it was about to catch on fire.

If you read the product write up on this kit it says that this material can withstand 1800F continuous. If my EGT is reading 1550F at wide open, then why is this stuff burning?

Anybody seen this before?

Is there anyway that the temp at my turbo can be higher than the temp at my number one runner? I have the smaller turbine housing on my 20g, and I think its clipped. 24-25 PSI is maxing my turbo out, infact my external wastegate never opens.

Ya I agree. I sent them an email, and I'll give them a call on Monday. I paid 72.95 plus tax for this kit so it really sucks to see it buring up.

Does anyone know if the temperature at the turbine can or does increases over the exhaust gas temp coming directly out of the cylinder?

Heat wrap will smoke for a while. There is still moisture in it and it's probably a combination of steam and smoke. Some components will burn off but in a couple of days the "smoke" will be gone and you'll only be left with an odor that will eventually fade as well.

The material that has the actual metal foil on it seemed to do just fine, but the aluminized (shiny metal fabric, see their website) material, that I wrapped around the turbine housing was actually boiling and melting. I don’t see how this is normal, and I am hesitant to drive the car with it still on there.

I see. Yeah, boiling and melting is bad um k? I would have to agree with you then if the actual structure of the material is changing so drastically. What are the chances that the reflective/shiny side was supposed to be closest to the turbo? My starter is wrapped in similar material and the shiny part is closest to the heat source (header). Was it only able to go on one way?

Hehe! It wasn't just a little smoke, it was so much that I couldn't see or breath. I touched the material today and it seems to be holding together, but it definetly doesnt fell the same.

Not sure which way it is supposed to go since thier "comprehensive instructions" did not mention this. Maybe it should have been installed with the shiny toward the inside, but if its boiling on the outside now, what would it do with the shiny against the actuall turbine housing.

I'm going to start it up again and see if its its done burning, I'll have the fire extinguisher ready!OMG

You did know that turbochargers tend to get a bit warm, right? I wonder if they do. "Felt"?

I'd like an outline of how it "Keeps turbo spooled up".

According the the part number and description he gave it would appear as though it's the right stuff for the job. I just wonder now if what they claim was really true or not. Anyone have specs on how hot the turbo normally gets? Like... maybe defiant with your cherry red turbo there?

Well, I took it for a drive and it did not start burning again. I noticed the smell, but that was about it. I don't know if I damaged the material or if its supossed to do this for break-in or something.

The reason I bought this kit was to lower my under hood temps. As an added benifit they claim that it helps spool. Hehe! Wouldn't that imply that a lot of energy was escaping in the form of heat radiation, any words on this?

At first take on this I don't see how the turbo can be hotter than the exhuast gas coming from the cylinders. Somebody shed some light on this subject.

Also, another thing that crossed my mind, now that I am wrapped and my turbo cannot dissipate heat as well, I will have to let it cool down longer.

Yes on the energy from the no longer escaping heat.

My thoughts (not totally certain) on the heat from the cylinders is that the turbo is compressing air on the inlet side (one heat source) and the exhaust is being concentrated at the turbo. You've got four cylinder's worth of heat all being concentrated at one point now (turbo).

Yes, it must cool down longer and you may also want to keep an eye on oil levels and oil coloration/odor for possibly more wear.

just want to know if anyone has thermo tec under there hood? how much would i need to cover my headers and cold air intake? let me know whats up. thanks.....

Yes I have some thermal wrap around my intake.. I thought the pipe was getting to hot and sucking in hot air so I wraped it with thermo wrap and it gain a little HP and runs better. I used a little over half a package wich was a 15'ft package. I did not want to wrap my headers cause i have ceramic coated headers and they look good for show...

i was researching on getting them too. but after reading an article on thermo wrapping.. i wouldnt do it.. tho it does help with the heat.. but you header needs to spread out the heat and by wrapping it down.. you are taking a chance with cracking your header or even blowing it one day on a high rpm run.

but its really your choice.. as i was gonna do it too.. but after reading that from a tech website for nascar, naw.. i dont mind a little heat under the hood.

:)

i'm interested in putting header wrap on my mild steel tubular manifold and stainless steel downpipe. I hear the wrap is great for keeping heat down in the engine bay and making the exhaust gases travel faster but then again i hear the wrap makes the piping so hot its more likely to crack. fyi i have the agp t3/t4 kit which has a mild steel tubular manifold and i have a custom made 3" downpipe. any help is greatly appreciated
