My 2gs head has 3 broken off studs in it, is leaking oil onto alternator belt due to cam seals. I'm preparing a fresh head to swap onto it, the big question is, can I remove the head without removing all of the timing components?

The timing components are all brand new with less than 5,000 miles on them, Obviously Ill have to unhook the camgears and ziptie them to the timing belt, but is there an easier way than that? I do plan on replacing the HG, and headstuds with l19s as well, and 3g revised lifters.

To reiterate, I want to change heads without removing the entire timing component side of things.

Kyle is right, you will have to retime the engine but if you have the timing tools, use the threaded rod that compresses the auto tensioner and compress the tensioner then you can slide the belt off of the idler pulley. If it were me, I would put it on TDC and check all of my timing marks BEFORE I took the belt and head off. You will be in the ball park for the correct tension but as tolerances change it may be a bit loose or a bit tight but should be close.

There is no way to change a cylinder head without doing a timing belt job. It's time to learn to work on your car the right way. As others said above, making a shortcut is the same thing as "rushing to failure".

Do it right or do it twice.
Don't rush to failure.
Fast, cheap, reliable.. pick two.
yadda yadda yadda.

Ill throw my two cents in. It has been done by zip tying the belt onto the cam gears. I have heard of racers doing this trying to make the next round. No way I would do this. Its not a big deal to just pull the covers and install the regular way. Rushing to failure is the best description ive heard

Just curious also, why are you doing a head for such small repairs? Does it need a head?
