Hey guys just rebuilt the head on my 1992 tsi awd factory 6-4 factory rebuild. I installed the head with arp studs hooked everything up (or so I thought) go to fire the care and the idle takes off to about 4k shut it down adjusted the throttle lines re fired the car and it idles really rough and stalls out. After getting frustrated I started it kept it running and went down the road... it stayed running but very choppy headed home and noticed my temp guage not working :( it wont build boost :banghead: I can hear the turbo spool but nothing. I know what your gonna say... boost leak gonna inspect that tomorrow or this weekend but what's with the idle... please help this things almost to craigslist status.. LOL not really but I am very frustrated please help me....

Oh p.s. there is a small plug that has nothing plugged into it right beneath the throttle cable brackets im not sure what it is and im pretty sure I have my ISC hooked up properly

The rough idle is either a plug not firing or an injector that is not firing. The idle issue may be due to your bis screw not properly adjusted. There is a turtorial on this. Also, check and see if you have your pcv valve hose hooked up properly too. Check your plug gaps and timing as well. Since you just rebuilt your head, it could be off or skipped a tooth.

The no boost issue is either, a coupler is loose, have a hole in a pipe, or check your WG and see if it is stuck open.

Ok im headed back put to work on it tomorrow I will try to post a pic of the clip and im pretty sure its not a boost leak its still on all stock piping an ic that's been on there for 20 years and STUCK I gapped my plugs when I put them in I plan to double check my timing marks and where exactly is the pcv valve.. oh and what about my temp guage not working there was a small pin in the tstat housing that broke on removal could that be it

1 : If a connector broke off of your Thermostat Housing and your temp gauge isn't work - there really isn't any clarification needed here.

2 : The PCV valve is located on the back of the intake manifold to the passenger side of the engine bay.

3 : Your issue is either a rather bad boost leak, a bad maf/connection/ or your timing is off from the sounds of it. This is only an assumption, however, going off of the information provided and assuming that the rebuild was done absolutely correct.

Double check everything and ensure yourself that it's right. Don't just assume. If you have questions, include pictures. They help beyond measure.

Do you have a picture of this 'plug'?

Hey guys just went out to work on the car and I had the cas 180 out fixed that and it ran the same wastegate is activating properly I took a pic of that plug and also a vid of it running but I can't upload it right now I will ###### have to put it on youtube and copy and paste a link I will do that in a few minutes but I have a new issue leaking coolant out of that silver canister on the passenger side in the bumper in front of the oil cooler wtf is that thing

92 tsi rough idle - YouTube

heres the video of the idle im having trouble for some reason and cannot figure out how to upload a picture of that plug i apologize this is my first post here and still dont have things fully figured out

Sounds like it is running rich. Check to be sure your coolant sensor is plugged in and working as it should. It also, sounds like you have an injector that is not firing or could be leaking. The way it was running, could be both or not getting a spark to one or 2 cylinders. Not much to go on here really.

If your car is leaking coolant, the location you gave, it is probably a catch can. Since we cannot see it, it is hard to say. If this is the case, your HG did not seal right and leaking coolant in the oil. If this is not the case, take a picture/vid with the hood up and point out the problem(s).

It sounds like it's starving. Do you have a way to check fuel pressure?

Here's a simple test - When it's 'running', take some starter fluid and spray it around the intake manifold flange where it's bolted to the head. Listen for a raise in idle. Could also be a horrible vacuum leak.

Also, Boost leak test, boost leak test, boost leak test.

Here's an update today I replaced that sensor and fixed my temp guage did a blt and it held pressure fine I replaced two of my injectors because I didn't think they were spraying it seems like cylinder 1&2 aren't firing at all but they have fuel and spark and while its running there is is a sneezing sound coming from the driver side of the intake manifold Idk where else to go

That sneezing sound is boost leaks. You should put a screwdriver on the injectors then put your ear next to it. You should be able to hear clicking noise, if not your injectors aren't working. Then it might be electrical issues.

Local machine shop did the rebuild and no I haven't done a compression test yet

And yes the egr valve is installed the intake mani was never taken apart other than unbolted from the head

When it was put back on, it could have a leak now. If they did not clean off the previous gasket material then, it could be leakinga and causing the hissing sound. It is a leak, for sure. If it is running lean enough due to leaks or bad injectors, it will do like on your video. Running pig rich will do something similar. It sounds like you have a leak so, get it fixed and do a BLT after hooking up the manifold.

IF it is electrical, you may have a bad ICM or a bad TPS along with a bis screw issue. Check the other, easy stuff first before going to the electrical stuff, though. Fix one issue at a time and post your finds.

Ya I plan to pull the intake manifold off this week. The head was hot tanked and cleaned there wasn't any left on the head and I was pretty sure I got it all off of the manifold but I could be wrong I guess so I will find out this week

It really seems like you have a huge vacuum leak, did you reconnect the brake booster hose on the back of the intake manifold?

How did that not show up in your boost leak test?

I am asking the same thing. I figured it was the intake gasket. Sounds like he needs to find a new shop too. That had to be a messed up job to do something like that. I have a 'cheap' gasket on mine and running 20 psi and doing fine.
