I'm looking to break 300 hp for high boost and turn it down a bit for daily driving. I believe I have the supporting mods to do 300 hp, but still need a manifold and downpipe. I was going to do E316g to accomplish this, but I ran across the Gt3071R. I was thinking for about the same amount, just get the gt30 and worry about the manifold and downpipe later. The reason I don't want to go too crazy is because I'm not looking to upgrade clutch and transmission wise or put more tear and wear on it, since it's already old and will be my dd. The other thing I was wondering is that should the ball bearing turbo last longer than the journal? I would assume so, but not sure. What are your thoughts?

Well the E3 B16g has a flow rate of 39 lb/min and the GT3071r has a flow rate of 46 lb/min from what I can find online. I have also read on a few different forums the 16g would be faster spooling.

I'd go 16g.

Just buy an HX35. There is no reason to spend $1,300.00 on a turbo when you can spend $300.

I'm really getting tired of reading this post over and over again. The OP clearly stated he was going for 300whp. He also stated it was between a 16g and a 3071r. Why do you think he would want to go for the larger framed HX-35 when he's already trying to decide if a 3071 is too big?

OP just go for the evo3 16g it'll work perfect for your needs.

Definitely just go with the 16g, shit you could do it with a 14b. But being that the 16g is only $500, that would be my choice.

16g bolts up and is there isn't much more you would have to do to get it to run properly!
larger Injectors to get the best out of the amount of air it pushes, but no need to really modify the oil feed and drain. and then you can find many manifolds that bolt up in the future!
Its cheaper, easier, proven to provide the power and its MHI.. realiable!!!

Thanks guys for the inputs, I'll just go with the 16g, sounds like the best bet.

FP30 housings fit any Garrett GT3076R; they do NOT fit the GT3071R's as the 3071 has a smaller turbine wheel.

Everything I've ever seen has led me that anything with "GT30" in the title use the same turbine wheel (3071/76/82R). I was not aware of different size turbine wheels within the 30r family. Being curious, I checked Garrett's site and it appears we're both right, they offer the 3071 with two turbine wheels. One is the same size as the 3076 and the other uses a T25 style wastegated turbine housing with a smaller wheel and this description:

"These wastegated versions of the GT3071R use specially-modified GT30 turbine wheels for use in the T25-style turbine housing"

OP, I'd also say the EVO 16g is more than enough for your goals, it can easily do 350-375whp on pump gas with stock internals and basic supporting mods. If you really wanted a little headroom to be safe, you could also consider the HTA68 or Blouch 20gXT.They will bolt on like the 16g, use internal gates, and outflow the 16g by at least 10% while spooling the same.

I run something similar on my EVO, it's made by Blouch for CBRD, called the BBK Lite. It uses a billet compressor wheel with stock turbine wheel and I've made 409whp on straight pump gas. It sees full boost sooner than a stock turbo.

I had a customer turbo a few months back which was a 3071R with the larger of the two compressor choices and it used the smaller turbine wheel and T2-flanged turbine housing.

It's up in the air as to which turbine / housing combo you'd get with a 3071R, and I wouldn't want to risk getting something you cannot use on a DSM.

I just see room for improvement. Why get a 16g when he's going to want more power later on down the road. No one ever keeps the same setup. If that were the case, everyone would still have T25's and 14B's on their DSM's.
