I am currently trying to figure out which turbo to go with on the daily driver. My goal is 400-450whp. Turbos that fit the description are Garret ballbearing gt3076r(aka 3052) or gt3071r. This is my current setup...

My plans are to daily drive and autox. I looked at the compressor maps for both and they look very similar. The gt3076r(aka 3052) seems to be more efficient throughout the map but puts me very close to the surge limit. The gt3071r puts my map right in the center the entire time and moves the surge limit far away. The other differences are the gt3076r(aka 3052) is rated at 52lbs/min and the gt3071r is rated at 49lbs/min. As stated in the title I want to run 20-23psi and keep my dejon smic.

Please give me your thoughts and maybe some feedback if any of you are currently running either of these turbos. I am looking for real data or educated guesses of which turbo better fits my needs. For example when should it start spooling? What RPM to expect full boost? How long till it gets back into boost during shifting? Any other important info along those lines is also appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

I would think with turbo's of those sizes, you are looking at spoolup to begin in the 4K range....There are ways to increase spool up to a lower rpm, but w/out a stroker motor or some type of injection, I would not expect to see spool up starting any sooner than 4K rpm range...

Running a smic with that turbo is a big mistake...Especially at 23psi, you are way past the limits of that smic, it may be fine for your current turbo setup, and probably ok for most 16g's, but with a turbo as big as the one's your looking at, don't expect it to still be cooling the compressed air like on a smaller turbo...Definitely look into a bigger fmic core instead, unless you wish to run much lower boost (which would not even put your turbo in it's effeciency range)

yeah my evo III is heat soaked in second gear on 17 pounds of boost. i cant imagine what you'd go through on that garett turbo

That is because the evo3 is WAY OUT of its efficiency range 15psi and above on the 4g63. With either of the two turbos I listed I will always be in the turbos efficiency range at 20-23psi.

Just because a turbo is in its efficiency range at those boost levels doesnt mean the ic will be efficient. The smic will heat soak at 23psi in no time regardless of what turbo you are running. If you dont already know this, do some research. Another point to consider also is the fact that most smic's become a restriction with larger turbos which will be detrimental to power output and increase spool time. If you have to use a smic, invest in water injection to help battle the heatsoak issues.
