(Cliff notes at the end)

Hey everyone, I have used this site for a while as a non-member and it has helped me greatly. But this issue I am having, I am unable to find similar symptoms searching around, mainly because the key words are widely associated with common transmission issues. Now for the story issue, let me apologize ahead of time for the long paragraph head I am unable to write undiscriptive...."stories"

Two days ago after work a friend wanted to see what my car was capable of, we drove to a safe spot about 15 minutes out. After zippin around a bit with some spirited driving I decided I was going to push it a bit further that I had before. What a friggin mistake that was, aparantly my car was very comfortable with the limit I had usually set myself at in terms of how hard I drove it. Boom, we rip through a turn in 2nd gear and the car is pulling hard, I decide to let the 2.3 stroker rev a little higher than the 6000RPM "safe" limit I keep myself at. Bam I see 7000RPM on the tac and hear the apexi n1 screamin :hellyeah:. I decide thats about the limit my engine wants to take, keep in mind this is not my normal driving, got a what I though was a good shift into third. Nope! I hear the agonizing crunch, chomp chomp chomp as my transmission starts eating its insides then pops out of third like it was its job :barf: A lot of $-@* #-@(+ @-&@ was said. I come to an embarrassing stop with an "OMGwtfbbq" look on my face, so much was going on I initially thought I trashed my engine. Thank (insert religious term or whatever you want, really) that it wasn't. After getting it home my face was glued to the computer monitor looking for people with similar symptoms. That led me here, writing ^^^^.

Symptoms/what's going on. While the car is NOT in motion and started there is no noise. If the car starts moving, regardless of what gear I am in or if I am in neutral, I hear a disgusting grinding/chomping noise that is consistent with how fast the vehicle is moving. The car will not go into third while the engine is running, if I attempt to ease it into third it grinds with tremendous anger.

So I am at a confusing 6 way Russian intersection with no lights or signs. I am pretty positive my third gear is done, but what about my center diff?

Cliff notes:
-vroom vroom driving fast and furious
-shift into third and my third gear dies
-not sure if my center diff is also gone
-tips/pointers please

Thanks. I know the story wasn't as funny as the look on my face at the moment, but I hope it was entertaining.

Sounds like a grenade. You drain the tranny fluid yet?

I have not yet but I will later today. What a delicious medal shaving/chunk smoothie it will be.

I'd say you sheared a tooth off of third. Time for a replacement.

For sure...do you think its more extensive than just a new 3rd gear and synchros? I know I should upgrade to a stronger transmission, but its not like my car is putting out crazy amounts of power. Im not sure if it was just an old gear that was pretty jacked up already and just finally gave out, in tern putting in a new 3rd gear may result in yet another smoked gear.

Well if your gear did shatter or something metallic shattered and floated around your transmission I'd be extremely worried about the whole assembly being peppered with debris. It'd be like running sand in your oil. Not good. Good see if a reputable shop could tear it down clean it all then evaluate everything and give you an honest answer and estimate of what needs to be replaced.

From what you described it sounds like the shrapnel got caught up in the other moving parts. At this time I think it's safe to call it a lost cause. You can open the case to confirm but I don't think there's much point.

Also, this is classic for clutch disengagement issues. If you have an aftermarket clutch (or even OEM) check that it's not dragging. Does it bite at the top of the pedal or off the floor? You may need to alter your driving style to accommodate the car, or else you'll do this again in a flash.

I do have an aftermarket southbend clutch, it engages about 2 inches off of the floor and I have about 1/2 inch of pedal play at the top before it even starts to compress the master cylinder.

That explains how that happened. It's easy to do when you think about it. If you're used to the clutch disengaging not too far from the top of the pedal you can shift much faster. You have to delay your entrance into the next gear a little now because of how this clutch bites. You really need to have your foot welded to the floor.

Shit happens dude. I made the same mistake once or twice but thankfully didn't break anything.

shes nuked...and guys correst me if im wrong but i think the center diff may be screwed too...because i believe if i remember the last time i tore one apart, the center yolk is driven by the 3rd gear spyder. its means to tear it apart and inspect. for sure. hopefully something is salvageable

Same thing I was thinking, only time will tell when I get it worked on. Ill keep the thread updated on what went on. Though I wish I could tear it down on my own but I wouldnt have a clue where to start, and I would probably just mess something up anyway. Ill ask whoever rebuilds it to snap a few pics so I can document the damage.

Another thought popped into my head with what you said. Could my third gear be acting up as a result of the ****** up center diff? Maybe my third gear is fine, after all it will go into third and drive, it just doesn`t sound to happy :)

(Side note, im done driving the car, so please don`t hate by assuming that I am still driving it, causing further damage.) Not that you were, just saying.

So after searching craigslist I found someone a few hours away from me parting out his gsx. With a rebuilt transmission. Looks like my blown transmission will be a further learning experience for me. Im gonna tear it apart. Findout what's wrong with it and possibly fix it and keep it as a spare. Or I'll just sell it and re coop some of the money I spent on the new transmission. if anybody in arizona is looking for some good parts at a good price search craigslist and try to find the ad. It's titled "2g eclipse gsx part out" in the phoenix craigslist ad.

Interesting. I blew my 3rd 4th slider and center diff... And my 3rd and 4th gear just wasnt there. you could hate munched the gears themselves or binded something up, I was stll able to drive 1,2,5,and R with all my crap granaded.

Do the smart thing as i did and send it to shep.

True, I dont think I am going to send it into shep, I am buying a rebuilt transmission tomorrow so I am set for now.

Also, is 1000 legit for a fresh rebuilt transmission?

for a stock rebuild? No....it also depends on who built it. Look at the shep stage 1 LOL its less then a grand and stronger then stock and you KNOW it was done right, and you get it back and it is all bead blasted and awesome. just sayin..... my $.02 jacks is closer (colorado) if you wanna go that route also.

Yeah its 945 But you have to include shipping both ways And the downtime of my transmission rebuild. Ill rebuild mine and sell it. Boom might be able to make a few bucks LOL

It also includes the rebuilt transfer case.

So my eclipse is back up and running :D

I bought a used transmission (8000) miles on the rebuild, 2 new front axles and a rebuilt transfer case for 1k.

I drained my blown transmission and surprisingly there were only light metallic glimmers every now and then in the fluid. Took the side cover off (not sure what its called, the one opposite to the bell housing) and those immediate gears had no damage. But I dont have sufficient tools with me to break it down further, to the actual damage.

You need a big ass socket, pin punches, something to hold the input shaft or an impact gun, a lock ring tool and possibly a gear puller for the 5th gear intermediate. You could take it apart down to shafts with what i mentioned.

Yeah I just need the socket, ill use a penny inbetween the gears:thumb:
I really only want to pull the center cover off and just look at what damage was done. I wont tackle the rebuild any time soon
