well heres my dilema. right now my srt-4 is running 12's the way it sits in my driveway and is my daily driver.

but im getting sick of high powered fwd. second gear is useless and im barking 3rd hard.

its just no fun.

so ive decided on selling my car and going with something awd. i use to have a gs-t and loved my dsm. so i was thinking of coming back but with awd instead.

now the prices of used evo's is sitting at about 25k. the evos are great cars but the price is hard becuase i can no longer do financing .

so i was thinking of getting a 2gb gsx and modding it out so it can run low 12's to possbile mid/high 11's.

the gsx seems much more practicle to purchase no matter how much more advanced the evo is. lower on insurance and has just about the same capabilities as the evo with proper modification and in the right hands.

has anyone else come to this reasoning and have decided?

any imput and advice would be greatly apprecited

LOL.. i wish i got good gas milage. i get 14mpg. taking off so slow that grandma behind me honks. and staying on the vac side of my guage. i manage about 180 to my 12 gallon tank.

Ouch! I really think its time to get a new car....;) GSX,GSX,GSX!!! That kind of gas mileage my Ram gets, and its got 4 more cylinders!!

Alright so one obvious burden in you choosing what to do is money. If you can't get financing it seems that you have 3 options here:

1-Buy an evo for 25K

2-Buy a 2g GSX for much less and spend all the extra money on making it one hell of a car. Might as well swap a 6bolt into it but like 1993eclipseGS said it would be rediculous to not buy a 2g because it has a 7bolt in it.

3-Actually do a proper suspension setup on your car and get some sticky tires. If the only problem here is that you spin through second then this would seem to be the easiest and cheapest solution

I think from the front evos look mad nice, but other than that it still does have a sedan look to it from the sides and the roof isnt as low slung and cockpit feeling as the eclipse. but if i were to get another mitsu id most likely get the evo especially if you ever have to tote ppl around u still got 4 door room. But the gsx would be more reasonable in money sense because you wont be selling your soul to by one and hook it up, but at the same time suppose you were unlucky enough to get one with crankwalk youd be spendin a lot of money in rebuilding and what not. Me personally i like having cars that you dont see as often and a 2nd G gsx is more common than a 1st G gsx, so id go first G awd 6bolt if you were content on getting an eclipse/talon. But like others said there are things you can do to make your srt4 handle better and still beat all wheel drive car as long as hes not more modded than you that is... good luck chooseing though

If you buy a 2g, at least buy one with 6 bolt already swapped. If not you might as well keep your SRT-4 cause you'll be walkin.

what the hell.........you should never hear the end of this. What gave you the idea that all 2g's crankwalk? like everybody else said.....its overrated, and please think before you even come close to talking

He's talking about crankwalk. But if you read my prior post, his comments are delt with by myself and a few other members. If your interested in learning more about crankwalk, just use the search engine and check it out. There is alot of information on the subject already on this site. Hope that answers your question.

I would get the evo.But because i got kids and the evo is the only way to have your cake and eat it too. If i was single, I would get the gsx no doubt.Sure the evo looks good, and it can out handle the gsx in the twisties anyday, but the 2gb body has to be one of the nicest looking cars ever created. If you just want the car for the 1/4 mile, then get the gsx.If your gonna be doing track events like time attack and such, then get the evo.Last time i went to thunderhill,a lightly modded evo beat almost everyone at the event, including a z06 vette,2 sr20'd silvias, a roush mustang,a porshe 944,350z,teggies civics, blahlbablah. The only car it didn't beat was a seriously modded 3000gt.Although you can make the gsx handle "like" the evo,you can even improove on the evo even more so.

Honestsly, if I had the money I'd get an EVO no question. It can do it all! Tear up the pavement at an autocross and then turn around and haul @ss at the strip, all while still on a factory warranty... well, at least until Mitsu voids your warranty for racing but I digress.

I say get an Evo, then again, my opinion is kinda biased since I bought one a year ago. I love this car and the 4 doors make it kinda practical. You can get used 03's for around $20k if you look.

WOW, a 4 door makes no difference to the insurance company, long are the days they build 2+2s for cheaper insurance.

Have you thought about a nice midpoint in your car choices, how bout a used WRX, Not as good as the Evo but better than a 2G. And you can find them real cheap now that they have come out with 2 more generations on the "bug eyed" WRXs.

who told you a 4-door doesnt make a difference with insurance??? how about before you talk, you research. I have personally seen with my very own two eyes my buddies insurance bill. his 4-door...and yes...i did say his 4-door SRT-4...and yes...i also said SRT-4 is considered a 4-door sedan. It is NOT.......i will repeat, it is NOT considered a sports car by his insurance company. So i dont know what your "WOW" was for, but nice try. Also, i said that an EVO might be the same way and that im sure it is different in some spots and certain insurance companies. In this guys case, it might not be the same way, but i know for a fact that my friends insurance company considers his SRT-4 a simply 4-door sedan.

:toobad: drop it allready so one insurance company doesn't consider it a "sports car" who cares, that doesnt mean every insurance company acts that way. There is no national law on whether a car with a turbo but four doors should have lower insurance. Every company is different, stop it.

Also evo's and srt4s have four doors because they are based on surprise four door compact cars. There is no two door lancer no is there a two door neon, so that is why they have four doors. Also four door cars have inherently stiffer chasis than two doors. Ever noticed why 4 door BMWs are raced and not two doors???

Who considers a car a sports car based on its looks? It comes down to the engine and handling not if you have to slide the seat forward to get in the back seat. Guess i better go get one of those sporty geo metros

I second the WRX. I just sold my WRX, and honestly, I'm really going to miss that car. Personally I have owned an eclipse, I currently own an EVO IX MR, and I am also driving around in an SRT-4 at the moment to keep the miles off of the EVO. Since I have experience with every car mentioned above, here is my opinion ( just an opinion, take what you will from it.)

The eclipse is by far the cheapest to buy, build, and insure. If you're on a total budget, this is the car for you ( or if you're partial to the looks.) these cars can go very fast, and the one I owned did so as well, though I grew tired of the base power you start with( it requires alot of work to get that real rush of speed.)

The EVO, another 4G63 powered mitsubishi, is like buying an eclipse, then sinking in another 10-15k in aftermarket parts. It's fast in a straight line, and it improves on all aspects of performance, not just quarter mile time. Over all, the most balanced car I've ever owned, and the power comes on strong, and with the Mivec head, there is gobs of more power waiting in aftermarket support. some might not like it's cheesy CF wing or the fact it's a sedan, I personally love this car.) One thing about the EVO, even with the bilstein shocks, it is a bit on the rough side for daily driving. This car will jar you over every bump and pot hole. The interior is decent, and you'd have to pay alot of money to get seats as good as the stock recaro's. The EVO is the most expensive to buy, and the most expensive to insure out of the bunch, regardless if it's a sedan( insurance companies, well most of them, run by statistics of cars, including things such as theft, which is not the drivers fault.) Not to forget, how many low 9 second Eclipses are daily driven? There are a couple EVO's that do it. The statment " you get what you pay for" applies here. You pay more, you get more.

The Srt-4, well, I'm driving a lemon. This car has been a total disaster for over a year now, and it's getting lemoned out, I'm just waiting on Chrystler. This is a one trick pony, it can go fast in a strait line, and only in a rolling race. Though they post good numbers at the track, these numbers are offset by alot of power the vehicle has to produce. AWD can do the same with less. The handling can be improved upon, and it can become a decent track or road racer, but it still will never beat out the EVO ( or even a properly equiped WRX.) The seats bostering keeps you snug, but the bosters stick out so far, gtting in and out isn't difficult, but can be awkward sometimes. Over all an ok car, but I may just be jaded from my experience.( oh, and the interiors are terrible.)

And finally the WRX. I just had to get rid of my 04 WRX because I couldn't afford to pay for both that and the EVO ( though I deffinately would have if I could.) the exterior, some may find goofy, butI like it. It doesn't have a giant wing, and the interor is much nicer than the other 3 cars. The stock brake system could use some work, but still not bad. You can find these used very cheap ( I'm already considering buying a used 02 to cover my loses of the 04, which I have found several for 10k and less.) The handling is good ( though not great.) it rides more comfortably than the EVO. It has a bit of understeer, but a thicker rear sway bar takes care of that in a hurry. The stock 6 disc is good for a multitude of tunes if aftermarket car audio isn't your thing. The shifter is good, the clutch is light, and this car is dead silent when driving. Seriously, when cruising, these cars are very quiet, though giving it gas and you'll hear the boxer rev up ( which, with an aftermarket exhaust, still has one of my favorite notes, thanks to unequel length headers.)Over all, this is a great car to drive, and there are tons of aftermarket performance parts you can put into it.

Over all, the fastest will more than likey be the EVO, though it'll cost you, if performance is all you're looking for, I'd go with the eclipse ( if you're on a very tight budget.) But the practicality and capabilities of the WRX shouldn't be ignored, it's an all around great car, and I had mine for 2 years, and not a single problem, (and my EVO is too new), but I can't say that about any other car I have ever owned ( and I have owned alot of cars.)

Why can't you finance it yourself? You'd be surprised what you can do if you try hard, look at several places, and try to talk dealers down. I'm only 22 and I don't have a big wonderful job ( not yet.), and I've driven all of the great Japanese model cars in one way or another. If you try, it'll happen, eventually, seriouly, I didn't think I was going to get my rex when I did, and I ended up with it.

well yes i love the dsm however i would die for an evo but if you cant afford it id either go with the 2g with hardly no miles if you can find one or a 1g shell and build yourself.have you looked into any other awd?like the stealth or 3kgt even a wrx would be nice. well i hoped in someway

you say to drop it....then you keep going........hmm.......:thumb:

and plus, that guy tried making me look like a dumbass, so i did the same thing back to him

Insurance is a HUGE issue with an EVO. I had a 2004 Lancer OZ rally edition. I traded it in for a 97 GST. The GST is a couple HUNDRED cheaper on insurance each term. 4 Door doesn't matter. Newer cars are more expensive to insure. Plus Evo parts are more expensive. Newer isn't ALWAYS better.

I don't think you'll want to get the EVO VIII. If I were going to get an EVO I'll wait for the X. It looks a hell lot sexier. It's gonna make some evo owners cry when it comes (which is in the next couple of years i believe)

I had a EVO. My insurance on that when I had it was on 74$ a month, full coverage. I would only say EVO now for a warranty if something unfortunate happens.

In my opinion the 2G GSX OWNS. Sure, the EVO 8-9 is modern automobile technology at close-to-its best, but the 2G's HP per $ with an AWD chassis is hard to beat. To most street tuners on a budget, it's all about the HP/$ ratio.

A 2G GSX is a sleeper on the street....most people will look at it and say its "just an eclipse" especially those from the "fast and furious generation" who think AWD turbo cars were not produced before the USDM EVO 8 or WRX.

If you ask me, the 2G GSX will get more "street cred." than just another average EVO 8. (don't get me wrong, the EVO is a bad motherf*cker) There aren't many GSX's left, let alone modified ones.

I say go against the mainstream trend and go with the GSX.

is your car stock?

stock i was getting the same mpg. babying the car , staying out of boost and having grandma honk the horn because i drive to slow. srt-4's get horrible gas milage for what they are.

if i was stock i wouldnt have my problems with traction LOL. my car is sitting at 300whp and 330 wtq.

i know thats not alot of power but after this point the srt4 becomes useless.
we have guys with dragradials and full race suspension spinning half of 3rd with more power. whats the point of the car if it spins till 75-80mph.

this is why i was concidering awd.

still going to look around
