So I hope I won't affend any Eclipse owners when i ask this question but since it is pretty much the same powerplant i should be pretty safe. I Love the Mitsubishi EVOs but they are kind of $$$ for a college kid. To bad the earlier ones never came to america. I like the Eclipse and own a GS for a daily driver. The Eclipse is becoming a little small though and I want to go to an AWD car(minnesota winters). I was then looking at the Galant VR-4. It almost looks like an evo want to be. I think to it came with the same running gear as an early evo. I was wondering what other people think of these cars? Do they have the same engine as the Eclipse (4g63) turbo? How do the transmissions hold up? After market support? Of course i would like to mod it making kind of a rally car.

Thanks for your replys

I am bored so I will answer your NEWB question, otherwise I would have flamed you and rolled on.

The GVR4.........IS........a EVO I. The GVR4 came out in 89 in Japan and Europe. It was such an instant success, it got mad praise from anyone that ever experienced anything dealing with it.

The Eclipse, Talon, Laser WOULD NOT EXIST had it not been for the GVR4. The 4G63T and AWD transaxle were first placed in the Galant, and the E/T/L share the same platform "essentially".

Good luck finding one cheaper than a 1G DSM. All American Spec GVR4's are limited edition, there was only 3000 imported, and they all have serial numbers.

I just sold one today matter of fact. #195/2000 1991 GVR4's.

The GVR4 shares pretty much everything drivetrain wise. 4G63T, AWD, AWSteering.

My GVR4 knowledge is limited, cause I am more of a 2gb guy, but the technology is essentially the same across the board.

Making a Rally Car out of a GVR4 is sad. Not to say that it wouldn't be cool. But abusing and possibly damaging a Limited Production car is always IFY.

Rally a old Toyota Celica or a Nissan 240SX, they'll take a licking and keep on ticking.

This is IMO of course.

Best of luck.

pretty much what gtxtacy said. -

I am an original GVR4 owner (197/1000)

I will probably have that car forever..

If you are looking for a GVR4 - http://www.galantvr4.org - is the best place to start. Always some for sale there and quite often a few members will know the history of most cars for sale.

I kinda agree about turning a GVR4 into a Rally car (even tho that was the big selling point then it was introduced to the US)

Rally History
But in fact we have a few club members that rally their cars. One is in the middle of a serious buildup (Larry Parker)

You do need to know - modding these cars is NOT cheap.

i coulda swore it was mitsubishi mirage and dodge colt that were the evo1... oh well i dont remember

hrmmm... I don't think any of you are truly right... But I think the Evolution Lancer is the replacement for the Galant VR4. Originally in 1989 the Galant VR4 was a rally car until the Evolution Lancer's Debut. And yes the DSM isn't supposed to exist without the Galant VR4.

The only problem you will find with getting a Galant VR4 and modifying them is. Their parts are hard to come by because the car is hard to come by because it is so rare. As you saw he is one of 1000 original owners so now you only have 999 left. And I know people up here in NE that own another 10 of them... and other factors exist.

Your best bet is to buy a 1g GSX/TSI AWD

yeah, I agreee. Dont turn a gvr4 into a rally car. Do it in an old subaru, maybe a 1g dsm, Gvr4's are too rare to destroy

I should clarify myself a little, I would make it look like a rally type street car. Many subaru cars do that but yet don't run off road. I thought it would be neet owning one, like owning a classic car. I didn't mean to offend anyone by recking a perfecly good car (I hate when people do that) I did some more research and realized they are rare and unfortunatly a lot of them are in very bad condition and need transmission or engine rebuild because people couldn't or don't take care of them. I will keep searching for one though and probably end up restoring one or probably end up finding a GSX. Still looking for an awd platform. However if anyone has any ideas on how to find a car similar to an evo layout let me know (looking at subarus too). Or if anyone has a Galant VR-4 that needs restoring...

Question though can the Galant VR-4 be switch to a 5 lug?

Another question wat was the Galant GSX?

thanks

Just wondering are you still looking for a GVR4?

I Just checked the GVR4 club and we currently have at least 20 listed for sale.

Anything from less than $ 2,000 to asking $ 15,000.

We even have one of the "RARE" unnumbered ones listed.
(over a two year period they made 7 that were not numbered, they were pre-production models)

and theres 2 more 'un numbered' cars, dunno if those 2 are pre-production or not. i just have some vin data, and there were 3009 galant vr4s produced.

GVR4 is mad pimp. At least the two I've seen. One had full leather interior. But they're so expensive, but they will hold their value.
