I'm posting on behalf of my neighbor, who is trying to replace the alternator on his Galant VR-4, it's either a 91 or 92, I can't remember which.

How do you get this thing out? He managed to get all the mounting bolts out, the alternator is completely detached, but we have not been able to remove it, you can't take it out from the top because it won't fit between the radiator and the power steering pump, and from underneath it won't clear the oil filter mounting.

What's the best way to get this thing out? Remove the oil filter mounting? Remove the power steering pump? I have no previous experience with this car, just doing a favor for my neighbor.

I'm sure you probably already have it done, but just so you know next time, remove the dr. side cooling fan and you will find it easier to get it out. Or you can remove the whole radiator and make it real easy to remove.

Well he did get it out, he actually removed the entire radiator. And his car only has a fan on the passenger side of the radiator (?)

Anyways, the problem now is that after he put the radiator back in and started filling it, it started leaking badly. It's not a hose, either. Can he get a regular Galant radiator or is there one specific to the VR-4?

I own a 91' galant VR4 and I am getting a new radiator. If i were you I would just get a nice aluminum replacement. Not only will you get charged an arm and a leg for the OEM replacement it still won't cool as well as an aftermarket one. 4g63's need all the help they can get in the cooling dept.

No way ive done mine 8 times and all you need to do is remove the pwr str pump out of the way then loosen the boost pipe and relays next to radiator and with the right turn and twist easy japenesy.
