Hi guys,
My starter on my 99 GST has been acting up. Its really slow turning over my motor and sometimes stops cranking. I went to my local advanced to see if they had a replacement. They only had a starter for the eclipse rs 420a. My ? Is would it work on the 4g63??

Check the cables and connections for corrosion and being loose. I had a friends car the other day not starting because the positive cable was so corroded. I cleaned it all up and the car started fine once again. I would check that out before you throw a new starter at it. And find the right starter for your motor the 420a one probably won't work. Order one from Rockauto or any vendor on here if you can't find one locally.

Thanks DSM. The issue is where I live there's really not a huge following of turbo dsms. I live in mustang, camaro and big lifted z71 country LOL sometimes it'll start fine, other times its really slow turning the motor over. Recently its been really slow. There was a little bit of corrosion on the ground terminal. I cleaned both and retightened them down yesterday still does it. I am going to check to see if maybe a wire came loose going to the starter. I just wanted to see if at worst if advanced in my area had them in stock.

How is the battery, and what is the voltage while cranking?

These starters are usually pretty reliable. You might have good luck with a used one, to save some money. There are a few vendors on here that can hook you up.

I'll know more tomm when I'm not working 12 hours LOL. I'm hoping its just a loose power cable. Battery seems fine. No dim lights etc. I am hoping to get another OEM. I really don't trust the remanufactured ones. I've had bad experiences with them in the past with my Hondas. :coy:

Before you start shotgunning parts, I'd highly suggest getting your battery load tested at a parts store for free. After that, remove and refresh connections. I'd save replacing a starter for last.

And, those four brushes in the rear assembly of this reduction starter have to be small, not like the bigger ones that are normally found in any other starter..why DSM reduction starters die sooner than others.

So...easy on the key when cranking since that rotor being spun by brush contact is extremely fast, which wears down these brushes.

Luv2rally its not a grinding just really slow turning over. It still starts barely. The 7 bolt motor and tranny has a 190,000 miles on it as of now. I am the second owner of my gst. But he had every single maintenance file and parts that he had replaced/purchased. And I looked through last night and did not see a starter. Could possibly be the original which in my opinion is pretty good LOL. 190,000 miles and no crankwalk :D

Also while reviewing the maintance records I noticed the oil was changed every 3,000 miles with 5w-30. Which oil is optimal for these cars?? I've read 20w-50 and so on. I'm due for a change in about 500 miles. Thanks guys.

At 190k I would say its ###### time for a new starter. If its giving you trouble I would change it. Its done its job LOL

Turns out it was a bad connection on the ground. Cleaned it up reput the ground on and starter works perfect. Did as crimson suggested also and had the battery checked. Advanced said battery was also getting weak. Purchased a battery while I was at it. The date on the old batt said 9/08 so

Told ya to check those connections bro!! ;) glad you figured it out, would have sucked to get a new starter and still have the same issues all because of a bad ground or loose/corroded connection LOL!

Thanks guys. Deff great people on this forum who are more than willing to help nubies out such as myself. I'm not a stranger to cars just new to the DSM world. I've had many cars with the H on the front. But I've always had a thing for Mitsubishis. When I first bought my car all I heard about was crankwalk this crankwalk that. 190,000 miles and no crankwalk I don't think its gonna walk LOL

Having worked at Sears Auto, I know part guys will try to sell you a battery if it's even 1 CCA under what the battery is rated. However, I'd say you got your money's worth out of a 5 and a half year old battery.
