so i just bought a rolling shell from someone and they said it had a 4g63 with a turbo in it. now they are saying it might not have been a 4g63 and might have just been a gs. the engine is gone and all parts are striped is there any way i can tell from engine bay or anywhere on the body weather this shell is for a gs or a gst?

Yes. The subframe will have a raised portion, or “hump” to clear the transmission.

If the engine was a 4G63 or 4G64 engine, the hump will be by the right side shock tower.

If the engine was a 420a, the hump will be by the left shock tower.

The hump will be on the drive side for the 420a. Post a picture, we can tell right away what car it's for.

Another dead giveaway is the cluster. Does it have an oil pressure and boost gauge? The stock gs/rs cluster only have will have the fuel and temp only.

easiest way to tell is by the location or the side motor mount bracket and the rear mount bracket:
