what are the weak points on the rod? and why are they bad for steet use?

probably the best money can buy, but you don't need them. in fact 99% of the members of this board will never need them. They are overkill for anything less than 800hp and they are bad for street use.

Why are they bad for street use?

Nobody on here uses them for street use so you won't get a straight answer. Everybody says they aren't good for street use because most aluminum rods will eventually fatigue and crack. I spoke with Groden and they said they would handle well over 1000 hp and daily driving. I don't plan on having that much power but, I'm buying them for my next engine so I can see about the daily driving part for myself.

I've seen eagle rods fail. They are a great product but they do have their limitations.

i was pretty close to buying a set but im not planning on makin 1000HP. my goal is only 500AWHP so i went with SCAT rods. from what info they have on them, its a different alloy thats good enough for street use, the only thing you gotta keep you eye on is the rod bolts.

Ditto that. Some people have no problems and some do. Maybe it's because they are cast in China.

I have seen Crowers fail, Gordens fail, Eagles fail, what is your point? Most of the time eagle rods get a bad rap because the person who used them didn't know what they where doing and screwed up the tune. We have them in both the automatic and 5 speed cars we have, running 9.7@141 and 10.5@137 respectively (eagles that is) and have never had a problem. Hell we have melted pistons off the rod and not hurt the rod.

As for Grodens if its your daily driver, I personally would choose another rod, just due to the rod bolt fatigue they see. But if you use it mainly for racing or its a second car, and you want one hell of a rod I would use them.

Props to you for not having a problem with them. I have tho. On a non dsm. It was not the tune, it was the rod. It was sent back to Eagle and they stated it was a casting flaw. I got a new set of rods out of the deal. Didn't help me with windowed block and bitched up Brodix head tho. My point was since they are cast in China maybe their content is hit or miss sometimes. Have we not all seen discussions on chinese steel? I agree that many people can't tune a car and they are to blame. The problem is that 99.9% of the people on this forum have no first hand experience with groden on the street. I do. They are in a small block that I installed 4 years ago. The engine made 530 hp on the dyno and has been on the power tour the last 3 years. It has logged 30,000 miles on it and never been out of the car. Sorry I'm not trying to be a dick but I have experience with these products too.

1. Aluminum rods require a thorough warm up before putting under any strain.
2. Aluminum don't last asmany stress cycles as steel or iron.
3. The increased expansion and contraction tends to fatigue the bolts faster

but be honest with yourself inmost cases a set of stock rods is more than most people on this board will ever need, and for those that need more i am sure a set of crowers are more than enoguh for those FEW people.

I'm not arguing the fact that they are overkill for almost everyone. The initial post was "are they reliable?" I'm stating they are. If he's building a race/street car than he should consider them. If he plans to drive a 100,000 miles a year than he should be considering a different approach to his build up anyhow. Currently I drive my car about 10,000 miles a year now. When I decide to overhaul I will not hesitate to use Groden rods for the benefit of a lighter rotating assembly.

more power to ya. but remember that you are creating an unnessesary maintance issue. also the weight that you are losing isn't really that important in a fwd, all that is going to do is cause traction issuse.

fwd, awd, rwd, doesnt matter. That's an argument we don't want to get into. The point of the thread is groden rods, and any weight lost in the rotating assembly is going to be significant regardless of the drivetrain layout.

Guys don't forget about GRP connecting rods. They are made right here in Denver. We run them in our aluminum rod 2G. Great product. There is a local we are shooting to take down this year. He runs single digits and has quite a few 800+ahwp dyno pulls. I have seen them all in person. Car is legit.

Bingo. I said fail from too much power. I bet I could bend carrillo rods in half with a t25 and DSMLink. Tuning is everything.

Most people get Eagle rods and figure it's fine to just put them in. You have to go balance them.

Everything is made in China :) . So long as it's nothing fantastic like a turbo or something, it's fine.
