Ok so sometimes (quite frequently) when I go to start my car it will fire right up but towards the end of it starting there is a grinding sound. To me, it doesn't sound like the actually starter is grinding, but I'm not sure since I've never heard one grind anyway.

I recall reading about the starter grinding on the flywheel sometimes and I think that may be the problem. But why would it only grind sometimes?

Below is a video I took earlier today.

Thanks!

Does the sound last, or go away after a bit? I had a similar squeaking/grinding sound, it would be there at idle, but go away when the car was moving. My crank pulley was starting to separate, so that could be something to look at for you if the sound lasts while the car is on.

All your upgrades? you done anything to it recently? Has it been sitting?
Mods in my profile. I put on a 3" downpipe recently but it was doing it before then anyway. No, it doesn't usually sit for MAYBE 1 full day a time while I'm at school.
It sounds like your starter isn't disengaging.

Any idea how to fix it? Or just time for a new starter?

well you can take off your starter and open it up and have a look, if you are going to buy a new one then it wont hurt anything to try right. I just had mine off and took it down to nothing and put new grease and cleaned it up and looked it over its not hard just like when you were a kid and you liked to take stuff apart just dont forget how it goes back together

iv herd that sound before, my friends 04 gti does that but alot louder/grinding right after starting. he said alot of gtis have it. once he replaced the starter he was fine. i would take the starter off and have a look see.like others have mentioned.

Hey It is the starter my 97 did it, made the same exact noise... I greased it and it went away but came back 3 month later, I finally just bought a new one and it is gone for good!!!
